Is my Buddy part Basenji?

  • Woof!

I'm Buddy and would like to know if you think I might be a Terrier/Basenji mix. I was rescued from the middle a busy street after I ran away from people who didn't love me. It was meant to be because now I live with two Brothers who love me as much as I love them. They feed me well, take me on walks, and let me sleep in their beds if I want. We go camping, boating, and fishing and I get to chase squirrels & lizards.

They say all Dogs go to Heaven - I say I'm already there!

  • Welcome. Could be a little basenji in there. What kind of noises does he make.

? Ran away? Did you get him from a shelter? Many lost dogs having families that do love them and are looking for them.

  • Jack/Parson's russel terrier mix for sure…. not sure about Basenji... but really, really cute pup. Might even be a bit of Border Terrier judging by the head/face

Buddy barks but also makes some pretty bizarre vocalizations when he gets excited. When boating at Lake Sonoma we regularly see Deer and groups of Wild Pigs and Buddy will just go nuts, squealing/yowling, etc. He definitely has a very strong Prey drive as he likes to chase cats, squirrels, lizards, etc.

My Brothers best friend rescued Buddy from the middle of a busy street in front of their house. They tried for a week to find his owners to no avail. They took pictures of him and made up fliers which were posted around the area and also posted to Craigslist in Lost & Found. Buddy had no collar/license when found and was not chipped. We feel his finding his way to us was meant to be. My Brother Steve has terminal cancer and on the night Buddy came home with us, was in a lot of pain. Buddy slept with Steve, sometimes lying on his chest and licking the tears from his face.

Whatever breeds he is a mix of, he is a wonderful dog!

  • Sounds like a wonderful dog… regardless of what he is mixed with or not... makes no difference, you have yourselves a great companion... and very cute too.... Still say Terrier mix... but who knows... regardless you are welcome here

  • I am so sorry about your brother. Yes, seems he was meant to be with your family. If you get a chance, record his vocalizations. We really love pictures and videos!

Hi everyone, Thanks for all of your replies! Rex just had his first vet visit (first with me at least), and he was given a clean bill of health. The vet that I saw also agrees with a lot of you that he looks like a Min Pin more than a Basenji, but he is likely still mixed with something because he's a bit too big to be a pure Min Pin. I've looked at a few DNA Dog Breed tests online, and they seem to range in price and in quality. It seems like some of the cheaper (~$50) tests are fake, but they go all the way up to almost $250 for the higher quality ones. Do any of you have experience with these DNA tests / have a brand you found reputable? I'll be sure to post the results of any of the tests with this forum! Thanks again, and Rex is doing really great in his new home!! [image: 1559586518913-img_3707-resized.jpg] [image: 1559586546977-img_3720-resized.jpg] [image: 1559586568474-img_3708-resized.jpg]

She is really cute though I don't see Basenji. Like Shirley said, only a DNA can tell you much for certain.

No idea, sometimes with mixes it's so hard to tell what the parentage is. I do think that your dog's head is a bit more refined than many of the pit mixes i've seen.

There are now DNA tests available that can pinpoint what your dog might be genetically. Some companies can only do 30 or so breeds but most advertise well over 150. Why should you care - well it is a way to know what sorts of things healthwise you should be on the lookout for as many breeds have unique health issues. I was at the vet last year and there was a puggle there with an eye issue - the owners shared what it was and it is common in beagles. They then went on to say that they had trouble with the other eye before and it was an issues specific (although not exclusive) to pugs. So much for hybrid vigor. Darling picture though - good luck

Thank you very much for the info. I will have to try the time out. He was crate trained as far as being house broken, but now when I put brownie in the crate all he does is whine.. I do have 2 older dogs. one that plays with him and the other, well he just growls at brownie. The mother that was there when I got Brownie was a white shepard, maybe that is where the broad nose comes in.
