Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • What is the forum knowlege about allergy shots for B's?
My vet is suggesting shots for dust mites and grass. My B licks her belly and legs bald. We have tried changing food, benedryl. and loratadine. Nothing has helped.

    Thanks

  • Have you had a full thyroid panel run? I know a basenji who had these same symptoms and was found to be hypothyroid. Once he was the correct dose of Soloxine the problem cleared up.

  • Thyroid test came back normal.
She is grouchy and her hair is thin.
    Now what?

Okay who did the thyroid? If in house, have them redone and sent to a legit lab! Because honest, what you describe sounds more thyroid than allergy. I always tell people not to waste money on in house as no matter what, you STILL need the full panel run by a legit lab… if its positive you need full lab to evaluate why and if it's negative they often are falsely so still need to run full.

Also, if allergies, often licking is sign of food allergies, especially if benedryl isn't helping. I would look into a limited items food like wellness fish and potato or pinnacle fish and potato. Give them a try.

  • I don't know much about the allergies but with Zahra's mite skin problem, I switched her food to Eagle Pack Holistic Chicken after talking it over with a trainer. Her coat is now beautiful and the hair is growing back from where she was infected and I have gotten to be rather picky about what the dogs get to eat, if it is does not have good ingredients they are not getting it.

I just wanted to suggest the Eagle Pack Holistic for a good food.

  • Candle is eating Science Diet ZD Ultra. The vet said this is the lowest allergen food. Comments?

Try switching to chicken or turkey based foods. Here's a link to an excellent evaluation of kibble brands: www.whole-dog-journal.com/food/whole-dog-journals-approved-dry-dog-food-list/ I would also be careful what you put on your hands before cuddling with your dog; lotions, essential oils, etc. can cause allergies in dogs

If you saw tapes, that is something that requires a specific med. My vet depends on me to see them because they do not show up on a fecal that shows the eggs of other worms. Tapes can come from ingesting a flea, and it's possible the shelter did not SEE the tapes, so didn't give med for it.

Oh, yes! Dogs can have seasonal allergies!!! Mine has seasonal (weeds and grasses) allergies, food allergies, and is even allergic to humans. His allergies are considered pre-existing conditions now, so pet insurance is not an option for us. Your vet will probably start your dog on Benadryl, but we've also had prescriptions for hydroxyzine and Zyrtec for our dog (only use these with your vet's dosing instructions). A simple thing you can do is to wipe off your dog with a damp cloth to get any pollen off of her paws and belly. It will keep her from tracking outdoor allergens inside, just as you would prevent by taking off your shoes at the door.

Both my sons have allergies diagnosed by a professional allergist and do fine with Basenjis. We have just got our 3rd B two weeks ago and no sneezing, coughing, itchy eyes. I think for you that it MUST be something the dog is bringing in or perhaps your dog is one that performs one particular way and my family lucked out with 3 of the other way. Maybe someday they will have a test like the Fanconi that shows the DNA of this family tree has more dander and the DNA of that heritage has less dander to near none. I do agree with the smart person that has posted on this site the best idea I have ever heard: rub a t-shirt all over the possible family addition, sleep with the t-shirt, and THEN decide. I know it is too late for you but a good thing to repost for readers. Good luck with your situation.
