Hello and new to Basenji's

Member Introductions
  • Good evening everyone,
My name is Shell and just adopted what some people call brat. A basenji/rat terier mix. His name is Tag and he is 5 months old. The reason we named him Tag is because he is mostly black but has one square spot on his back that looks just like a price tag, Enhance the name Tag. I have a cattle dog that is just over a year old named Teeka and a pure bred mutt named Freddy. I am a foster mom to. So I have one foster named Bella who is a rat terrier.
I found this group in the home that I will learn more about basenji's.

So any info on this breed would be great.

  • Welcome, Shell. I love ratites, so a basenji-rattie mix sounds like a treat. Can't wait for photos!

  • buckle up, you're in for a wild ride! however, basenjis can be addictive.
    welcome

  • Welcome to the board. Please share pictures! Does your guy bark or does he make basenji noises?

@elbrant That's how all my 8-some learned to catch. If food dropped on the floor - you lost it ! So they all stood on their hind legs and it was like feeding a nest of fledgling sparrows. A gentle toss of the treat and someone caught it !

I welcome you also. Puppies are so adorable. Just remember a quiet Basenji is not necessarily a good thing. After all these years I still forget that one.

Yep, we do agree on most things (bossy? or boss?)(both I think-it has something to do with me being a control freak-I like orderly fashion). True there are some dogs/bitches that will just not get along EVER. If I do leave with dogs that typically don't get along-grouch,snarl,sneer,etc.-I'm sorry-but they're separated. Either in separate rooms or crates. If you can't get along when I'm here, then chances are you won't when I'm not!! I did train other people and their dogs (notice I put people first) but as you say-meager. Now I just train my own, the occasional consult and focus on grooming, and the B's. I would love to make a living with just dogs, but, alas, that is really hard to do!
