• Okay just have to ask this question. Our Basenji likes to give kisses like no other dog we have ever had. She
was aloof when she was a baby, but now that she is a year old. oh my gosh she is miss social lovebug and loves everyone.
She cannot give kisses enough, which some people dont like I know. She does the funniest thing. If you are laying
down she will literally pin you down by your shoulders hold you down and kiss you to death. It is hysterical when
she does it to my husband, because he is a big guy and he is laughing so hard he cant get her off him. She is the
most comical little dog we have ever had. And I was worried at first because when she was little she was very wary
of people. Now anyone can come in and she wags and baroos like there is no tomorrow. Has anyone ever had
a Basenji that started out shy and aloof and than bam became a social butterfly?

  • Says that you have done a good job raising her… Kudos

  • I would say that is unusual for a Basenji. Most of mine have not been kissers, particularly on the face (although they do like to lick hands that have anything interesting on them, like hand cream). My current boy will simply not "give a kiss", and my previous Basenjis would do so only if asked, and under protest, although my one girl would wash my face, particularly around the eyes, nose and ears, if she was in the mood. I believe it was a grooming effort, as she did the same to my other girl. 🙂

So enjoy it, but you do need to teach her to only do it with permission when you are dealing with guests. Just like jumping up, it is unwelcome behaviour to many.

Thanks what a nice compliment. She is our first Basenji. So she was the guinea pig lol or should I say we are the guinea pigs lol

  • Yes I agree we are trying to teach her that not everyone loves Basenji kisses like we do. It is funny my sister in-law who is 5 months
pregnant was over for Thanksgiving and Kobi was fascinated by her. It was like she knew she was pregnant and wanted to sit right on her lap
and lay her head across her shoulder and lick her face. We were correcting her, but my sister in law fell in love with her and wrapped her in
her arms and let her sit there and cuddle and kiss her. it was pretty cute. Its like she knew she had a baby in her belly and did not want to
    leave her.

  • She also wakes my sons up with her kisses in the morning which is good because they ignore me, but they
cant ignore her. She ends up gettting grabbed and hugged by them so hence now they are awake. She is better than
    an alarm clock

I think that is great! She will be a good dog with kids, and that is a huge plus, IMO. 🙂

  • yes we are very happy with her. we are going to get another one in the near future I think.

  • Oakley loves me to death but is still aloof with strangers and he's not a huge licker, much to my surprise seeing he's my shadow, very attached.he isn't outward with his emotions

  • She is definitely outward with her emotions. lol. Everyone knows when she is happy, and not happy. Even though
the not happy is pretty rare. The only time she grumbles is when we stop her from doing something she wants to do.
But I can take toys away from her, take a bone back from her when I feel she has had enough of it etc. Not a peep
out of her. But she sometimes just doesnt like being picked up and grumbles if you do it and she doesnt want you too.
But a grumble is the extent of it. We just say hey no grumbling allowed, just kisses and she will lay a wet one on us and
forget about the fact she didnt want to get picked up. lol

  • I love it when I read posts like yours, knowing that we have another convert to B Lovers Internatioinal. We adopted our first little girl almost 5 years ago and can't seem to get enough, adopting 2 more boys in the last 3 years. We love sitting on the back deck and watching them race around the yard only to have them run back and flop on the deck at out feet, grinning from ear to ear. Do we love B's?, you bet we do.
