Basenji Mix?

Show Off Your Dog
  • Hello-

My boyfriend and I rescued a dog back in August. Ollie is now about 7 months old. On the origial adoption paperwork they wrote lab/terrier mix, however, I don't think that is the case. We have had quite a few people mention Basenji to us- a breed I knew nothing about. After doing some research I do believe Ollie may be part Basenji (both physically and behaviorally). He was just neutered last week and the vet told me he weighs 33.6 llbs. Just looking for some opinions. Thanks…

I have attached a few photos- one is from when Ollie was still a wee puppy- the others are more recent!

  • Do you have any photos of him standing up, a side view?

  • The last one, lying down with crossed paws, makes me think Basenji. Whatever he is, he is very cute! :)

  • Did he come from Taiwan, by any chance?

His muzzle is a little wider and his coat seems a little plush (maybe still puppyish), but aside from that, he resembles a lot of Formosan Mountain Dog mixes I know.

  • He is Gorgeous! The third picture looks a little Basenji to me, but I'm not an expert

I can see why someone would think there was Terrier, but I'm not so sure about Basenji. (The only way to know for sure is to do a DNA test.) Both of your dogs look very similar. What breed, or mix, is the older one?

OMG soooo cute. Her colouring and face don't look like a basenji, but maybe she's mixed with something with stronger genes. Do a DNA test. That would be fun!

@Buddys: Actually, my first B was found running around and was not altered. Always a possibility since the canine need of procreation is pretty darn high up there with food, water, and air…... Oh I'm sure it does happen and will continue to happen but I just don't see it happening as much as rescues claim it happens. I know for a fact some shelters (the one I worked at did!) will label dogs as rarer breeds to get them adopted faster. We had two scruffy "doodle" mix mutts and the animal warden INSISTED they were Wired haired pointing griffons. LOL.

What a cutie, sad such beautiful dogs get put down. To me the ears look Basenji and some of the things he does as well, Kaiser does a wait and stare. Do let us know if you get him tested what the results are. Find Kaiser needs mental exercise more than physical, he is a very good puzzle solver, maybe you can play some mental games and see if that helps to tire him. Jolanda and Kaiser

The traits you described are also found in most of the Nordic/spitz type dogs. I don't see anything overly basenji-ish about him in the pics. What ever he is, he's very hansome.

Oh yeah, he looks way more like a b-mix to me than a lot of the pups listed as basenjis on Petfinder. And they mention he's not a barker. What a cutie! Someone go get this guy! :D
