Any ny basenjis?

  • First Basenji's

Damn thats sooo far both of you are pretty much equal distance from me, its kinda funny both are about 1.5 hours away.. I am still def down to meet up and if we all three can that's even better!

  • I never travel North Into NY.
    I don't drive well in cities,and traffic.
I don't mind back roads and little traveled oads but
I had a car accident 2 years ago that left me with
severe PTSS and cars traveling behind me freak me out.
So, I stick close to home and if I do travel it is south Jersey and into PA
where the roads are not that bad.

I'm sorry to hear about ur accident. I usually, actually pretty much ONLY drive on highways, as I live on one. I love them cause they are so direct. I understand your fear because when anyone other than myself drive on them with me I FREAKKK out. People in Jersey are terrible drivers but we feel we are the best lol. Anyway, I still hope we can work something out maybe meet around my town, seems half way from both of you but doesn't matter to me I am willing to travel I like going out a seeing new things and I want my little girl to have the same in a sense.

  • Sorry to hear about your accident Kathryn, I wish we were closer! I am about an hour from Newark.

  • rocky, we should meet up sometime! i'm down im tuckerton.

as for ny basenjis, on meetup.com there's a group for basenjis. they meet up a lot in nyc!

  • First Basenji's

Oooo thanks for the site! I signed up. Hopefully there will be a meet in the near futur!

  • NYC is not do able for me.
I'm not that far from Tuckerton,45 minutes down the Prkway.
If you could come up to Lakewood, there is a 4 mile walk around The
Lake or Pine Park or Ocean County Park.
I walk there sometimes with my Rocky.

  • Hi, we live in Rockland County NY . We have a 5 month old male Basenji.

  • First Basenji's

That's about an hour from me.. not too bad when my girl is finished with her shots we should meet up! She is 13.5 weeks right now.. the one website Suzee posted on here http://www.meetup.com/basenji-5/ is having a meet in April. I won't be able to make it this time but next time they do I should be able to! Hope some of you guys could as well!

  • Hi anniedny! I live in westchester, about 20 min from you, I have a 12 week old girl, we definately must meet up! What do you think?

  • Sounds good. Where would we meet?

  • I have to wait unil she has all her shots, I would think we would want to meet at a park somewhere, I am not sure how dexi would be off leash because she is either on a leash or in my fenced in backyard, how is your guy off the leash?

  • Kennedy is never off leash. He is too curious and would run for anything he would see…. Let me know when she has had her shots and we can set something up.

  • I never let dexi off leash either, just in my fenced in yard. It would be great if we could find a fenced in area but i am not sure. I will contact you after her next set of shots. Looking forward to meeting another basenji, i had a boy as a child!

  • Hi my Dexi just got her shots and can be around other dogs.. We would love to meet! Are you available on the weekends?

  • I am in NY… Orange County. Would love to meet other Basenji owners. Less than an hour from the TZ Bridge.

  • We live just across the bear mountain bridge, we have a 3month old girl, would love to meet. Where in orange county do you live? How hold is your B?

  • Hi Benti, my basenji is almost 5 months. Her name is Zoey. Do they allow dogs at Bear Mountian State Park? It would be nice to meet.

  • I am not sure if they allow dogs that would be great. I love only 10 min from there.. Is zoey good off the leash? I don't trust Dexi yet.. How can we find out if they allow dogs. I would love to meet..

@antigone said in Basenji Puppies in Qatar?: @debradownsouth I have a friend who lost 2 Austrailian Sheepdogs on a Delta Flight from LAX to JFK. Death in the Cargo Hold is more common than you think. Nope, they actually keep statistics. It is precisely as common as I think. Some Airlines treat Pets as Luggage and that is not right. So I must disagree with you regarding long Flights. The Vets recommend SEDATION for any pet that goes on a Plane. Nowhere to start with "treat as luggage" because what does that mean to you? How do you know? Is putting in cargo your idea of "treat as luggage" or is it something like abusive or uncaring? As for sedation on flying... you need new vets and to report those who tell you that. For anyone who thinks you are right, below is information based on facts: According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), sedating cats or dogs during air travel may increase the risk of heart and respiratory problems. Except in unusual circumstances, veterinarians should not dispense sedatives for animals that are to be transported. https://www.avma.org/public/PetCare/Pages/Traveling-with-Your-Pet-FAQs.aspx Also ""Q: Should I tranquilize or sedate my pet for long flights? A: It is recommended that you DO NOT give tranquilizers to your pet when traveling by air because it can increase the risk of heart and respiratory problems. Short-nosed dogs and cats sometimes have even more difficulty with travel. Visit our FAQs about short-nosed dogs and air travel for more information. Airlines may require a signed statement that your pet has not been tranquilized prior to flying. According to Dr. Patricia Olsen with the American Humane Association, "An animal's natural ability to balance and maintain equilibrium is altered under sedation and when the kennel is moved, a sedated animal may not be able to brace and prevent injury.""" FDA https://www.fda.gov/AnimalVeterinary/ResourcesforYou/AnimalHealthLiteracy/ucm352635.htm Sedatives: While sedatives may make your pet seem less stressed during car trips, these medications also have a tendency to dull the senses and lessen your pet’s ability to react to the environment, which can be dangerous in an emergency. When traveling by car or by plane, avoid giving your pet any type of sedative. If you think Champ or Freckles really needs a sedative to travel, talk to your pet’s veterinarian before your trip. Airlines: https://www.united.com/ual/en/us/fly/travel/animals/procedures.html United supports the American Veterinarian Medical Association’s recommendation to not accept animals that have been sedated. United will not knowingly accept a dog or cat that has been sedated and accepts no liability for the death or sickness of an animal caused by any drug. PetAir UK Q. Can I sedate my pet before they fly? No. No and No. Those clever folks in the USA did a study on deaths of animals after flying and veterinary grade sedatives were implicated in around half of them, so it is banned. Secondly, there are no drugs which will work for the full length of the journey and no-one can guarantee how they will work with the air pressure changes and if they make your pets excitable or too sedated we don’t want that to happen. https://www.petairuk.com/faq-page#t16n175 I could post more but state by state vet assoc say the same thing.

I will check out the Facebook page. There is a nice dog park in Encinitas, but I'm not sure how far you are from the area.

Hi, Yes we have a 10 month old basenji in the South Philly area. Would love to see him running around with another basenji, but have yet to see one in the local dog parks. How old is your boy?

Find a good positive reinforcement puppy class, like clicker training and you will both have fun. All of mine have earned at least a rally novice obedience title and love the training. There are some things that you should not expect of a basenji such as being outside off lead. They are sighthounds and must be on a lead or in a fenced area at all times. The biggest issue with a house with children is that the children must understand the door can never be left open. My inlaws have a terrible habit of wanting to stand in the doorway and talk as people leave. I have to shoo them outside so the dogs do not try to dart outside given the opportunity. We have had ten basenjis since our son was two, he is now 27 and the basenjis raised him.

We will try to keep the 6th open. Depending on how things go next weekend we might shoot to go done on Sunday.
