• @Dog:

Wow I will get the strips and make sure I have a vet that knows about Basenji's.. But I will look at the paper work he has on the line and do more research

You don't need the strips if the parents and the pup have had the direct DNA test and all has came back normal. I would make sure to ask the breeder if he has done the direct DNA test and to see the results. This is in your best interests as well as the puppies.

I will do that. I am also going to get there Sir/Dam name and look it up. I am glad I have found this site.

  • Responsible breeders have their breeding dogs tested before breeding. While the direct DNA test for Fanconi just came out in September, some may have missed having it done, but would have tested prior with the linkage test. If the pups were born in late December, the sire and dam should have been done prior to breeding. And honestly, that is just one important test that should be done prior to breeding.

If they are not recorded on the OFA site, chances are they have not been DNA tested for Fanconi. Fanconi is not a test that is done by your Vet, you order the cheek swabs and do the test. So you should have this pup tested by the breeder before you take the pup home.

  • @dcmclcm4:

There is no excuse for a breeder to breed Basenjis without being DNA tested for Fanconi Syndrome! The test costs only $75 dollars per dog. There is also no excuse for anyone to purchase a puppy without at least the parents being tested as it will only encourage these breeders to breed more untested pups in the future. I also have a problem with puppies and their parents not being eye tested since many of my rescues have had genetic eye problems at younger ages.

The test is $65.00 or $50.00 if a retest from the Linkage test

I did some looking around and found the DNA test through OFA. I am going to talk with the owner of the mom and dad and have him do it. i didn't know it was DNA until I looked around. it will be taking care off asap

  • Cheyenne is beautiful! I'm sure you will enjoy her– she will definitely keep you entertained.

I'm glad to hear that the parents are Fanconi-clear. They have been lab-tested, right? It's not just the owner strip-testing and saying they're not spilling sugar now?

Congrats again on your new addition. She really is a beauty!

If your breeder had tested the parents for Fanconi, I'm pretty sure he would have told you. It's a very big deal with Basenjis, and responsible breeders are quick to share health results. You're doing the right thing by checking it out, because you need to know if your little girl is at risk, and the sooner you educate yourself, the better. But let's hope your adorable girl is clear and has a long, healthy life in front of her. She really is a beauty!

i just checked with him about it and they are clear of it Thank you for the comment she is wonderful when I visit her. Very Playful now, I know she will need daddy time alot.lol oops looks like the wife will have to understand

Don't want to be a "stick in the mud" but did you see the results posted on OFA site? Or the certificates from OFA with the Sire and Dam's results? If the sire and dam are done, no reason really to do the pups (if the sire and dam were done with the direct test)

  • Did you look up the parents for yourself on the OFA website? It is really best to verify for yourself that the testing has been done. It is very easy to type in the registered name or registration number of the parents to see if they are in the OFA database.

TO all I did look up the results on the test myself and everything is good.. I am happy to say
