Not any more, really… you need to do the direct test. Results have change from the Linkage test to the Direct test. We have seen pClears change to Carrier and pCarrier change to Affected with the direct test. The only way to make sure is to retest. Dr. Johnson recommends retesting all breeding stock. If you go to The Basenji Club of America site and then to Dr. Gary Johnson's presentation you will see that recommendation for yourself.

it very interesting. I find new information. But retest dog from Latvia it will cost realy big money. I done at this moment all what I can. I can give full guaranty about mother line dogs is healthy this line dogs is healthy and live ling healthy live. About male no information.
We have expierencve with cardiomiopatia gene test in doberman breed, people have expierence -dog is bad result need by sik, but live to 12 year helthy. Gene test is perfect, but dogs from this line gone in 3-4 yers olf from thi problem. This tests help but not perfect for "dianosis- gog is ill." People send from one dog 2 tests and get back different results.

  • I know that the dam of the sire was one of the dogs whose results changed from p.Carrier to Affected. Luckily, his sire retested Clear so the puppies from that breeding are all Carriers. I also know that there is a dog recently retested that went from p.Clear to Carrier and both his parents were p.Clear so will need to be retested.

Also, since it is a retest, the expense will not be as much as you may be thinking. You most likely will not have to submit a new sample so it should be only the 50 US Dollars for the retest.

  • Wait test kit to 3 month and then result to 3 month- it is result after 6 month, at this moment to much time. For our country it is not only 50USA. For 1 test I pey with sending, post , bank 129USA

  • No waiting for test kit, because they will use the kit you already sent so no post, just the cost to order and the bank charge for the conversion to US Dollars. The Basenji Club of America is subsidizing the retesting for ALL basenji owners for the next two years so the cost is reduced to $50 instead of the $65. Results are changing so it really is something that you need to do to be sure you are really breeding to Clears.

  • We live in Latvia, Europa not in USA. I wait very long time test kit and result.

  • You are not understanding what I am saying. The retest does not require a kit. They already have your dog's DNA. It does not matter where you live, they will retest using the DNA that they have stored so there is no waiting for the kit, you can order online and check the results weekly online using the link they send you at the time of order. It takes about 2-3 weeks for results though could be longer.

@senjisilly said in Basenji Puppy in US: Get Educated BEFORE you BUY I second this motion! Seriously... to quote the animal shelter I got my Aussie/Border Collie from during the holidays back in the day... "A dog is not for Christmas. It's for LIFE!" Let people who've been in this breed for some time, have contacts, know the in's and out's guide you. Picture in your mind a 15-year commitment. Help this breed by supporting responsible breeders who are passionate about the breed. How do you spot a Responsible Breeder? Insist on health testing PRIOR to breeding. Know your breeder's goals for the breed. Meet them! See if they're in @Zande's Pedigree Database. Read the Basenji Club of America Illustrated Standard on @tanza's site. Most of you won't ever show your dog and that's OK! Your breeder should know the Standard inside and out. They should be able to talk to it. Read it and ask them how their line supports the standard. Ask them what their breeding goals are, what they've been working on, where they are going, etc. That's fair. A good Basenji breeder is going ask you a TON of questions, AND THEY SHOULD! We want good solid safe homes for puppies, retired show dogs or dogs that don't want to show. Not every puppy will be a show dog. In fact, most won't be. Litters on average are between 4 and 6. Responsible breeders need pet homes for puppies that aren't going to part of their breeding programs. You can support responsible breeding by providing pet homes. Just make sure your breeder will make time for ALL your questions both before and AFTER the purchase. Mine will! :beaming_face_with_smiling_eyes:

@debradownsouth He was Arrested and then he died. I will refrain from posting Horse related posts. You just did not believe me when I said Horses are taken to Great Adventure. Now regarding the Basenjis relation to Wolves: Mu dog loved the Wolves and when I would walk the Wolf and the Dog in the Park the Dogs there which included Rotties, Saint Bernards, Bull Mastiffs all pulled their owner out of the Park because Dogs instinctively fear Wolves. Thannks!

I would also look on Petharbor and Adopt-A-Pet. It can be difficult to find one under 1 year of age. You might have to go farther in your search or perhaps raise the age to 2 years. Jennifer

Hi Patty, Linda own's both Rosie's sire and dam. However, I am the cobreeder, and I was there for her dam's birth, shepherded her to her reproductive vet appointments, and I own Rosie's aunt and great uncle. I participate con several other basenji lists that were active long before this forum so that usually takes up all my free posting time. :p. I currently have a pack of four, including Rosie's brother Ra. My oldest dog Nut is not a basenji, but was adopted as a rescue and was a lonely 9 month old only dog until she was six months old and Rosie's great uncle Khonsu came home as a nine week old puppy. They got along beautifully, and still do. Three years later, Khonsu's niece and Rosie's aunt Jane camecto live with us. While she was still a puppy, she and Nut got along, but once she matured the household tension started. They have had several blood letting fights, and I'veclearned how to manage the household without running two packs, but it is NOT easy, and I cannot recommend it unless the people involved are completely dedicated to making it work. Where two or more boys can get along, often two bitches are not a good pairing; they can really hold a grudge. Breaking up a dog fight is no fun, and I've got the scars to prove it. If Greg and Lisa want a companion for Rosie, I'm all for it when she gets to be 6 months to a year old. Then she will have bonded well with everyone in their family, and will be less likely to bond more with another dog than with the humans. She will be approaching adolescence, and they can do a better job of selecting a suitable lifetime companion for her and their family. Katy Scott
