Congolese School at Epi

Off Topic
  • Hi All,

The Basenji Club of Southeastern Wisconsin just started a Facebook page (see below) for the Congolese School at Epi (?cole Primaire Priv? G. Barbero) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The headmaster, John Valk, helped Jon Curby and others on their expeditions in the region to look for basenjis as new foundation stock. BCOSW gives a yearly donation to the school and we are trying to expand our fundraising efforts as the pool of donors right now is currently limited to a few individuals and friends of John.

We have plans to make some unique basenji-themed merchandise available to fundraise for the school. So like the page if you're on Facebook if you want to keep up to date. I'll try to remember to post information here too, particularly when the merchandise is available.

Thanks for the info. I put a shorter link in the original note. Hopefully that fixed it.

  • I have a shorter link for the facebook page now.

Our first fundraiser for the school will be t-shirts, sweatshirts, and tote bags (I think these will be a big hit) using artwork designed by Wanda Pooley based on an iconic photo of a brindle basenji taken by Mike Work. The artwork is almost complete so please like the page if you're on Facebook. Even single dollar that we raise for the school makes a significant impact.

Edit: And you can read about how our club got involved with fundraising for the school on the Blog tab (it's the first one that shows up when you click on the link).

    Thanks,
    Clay

  • Artwork designed by Wanda? Starting to wonder what she can't do but I really know better. Sounds like a very worthy project. I'll throw in for some of what ever.

Wanda can accomplish something in Photoshop in minutes what it takes me hours to do. We're lucky to have someone with her talents in our small club.

We're going to have a PayPal link on the website in the near future so people can make small donations if they wish rather than purchasing merchandise.

  • I guess I didn't know she was a member of your club after moving way down there. I'm just West of you and sure plan on making the big meeting in Sept.

We voted Wanda as a lifetime member of the club before she moved to TX. We weren't going to let her go that easily! :D

I'm glad to hear you're coming to the National. It would be nice to meet you.

  • I think she told me she is planning to be there also. Haven't seen her in a couple of years, first four I got from her. She doe have a birthday on Monday!

I cannot imagine committing to buy a puppy without seeing the animal and if possible the sire and dam. OTOH, a rescue (or adoption of an older dog) is a different thing. My last two Basenjis came to me sight unseen, and turned out to be wonderful dogs, but the breeders I got them from wanted to place their dogs in an experienced Basenji home, and I only paid the cost of getting the dogs to me. One came by air, one was personally transported to me by his breeder. If she hadn't been happy with what she found I expect she would have taken him back with her when she left. I also had to commit to return him if ever I couldn't keep him. Good breeders care about where their dogs end up.

@kembe - Very True Kembe, here is a link on looking for a responsible breeder. https://bconc.org/finding-breeders-red-flags There are many scammers out there, don't fall for one.. or a person that is not a responsible breeder.

@sanjibasenji Thanks for the article on Dog Genome Project - I found it very interesting. I was trying to figure out the interactive Genome wheel. It has the basenji closely related to the Azawakh and rat terrier but I’m still trying to figure out the first wheel which has the basenji listed w/ black/grey starting point. As far as the PBS Dog Tales video - it’s very interesting - it’s season 47 episode 2 - I highly recommend you watch the whole thing (54 minutes).

@Kembe, nice post! We've gone to solid food chopped up in a food processor, but we're grinding it a bit more course as we go. So far, no puppies are choking, but good to know!

Yes, they were so excited to be on TV and so early in the morning. Usually are rallies are at the end of the day but this one was at 8am so it could be on TV.
