My dog is a basenji, right?

    And if so, what is he mixed with?

    So w just got him this last Tuesday from a humane society shelter and it said on the tag he was a basenji mix. I have been doing research and am inclined to agree. My grandad (who owned basenjis way before I, or my parents, existed) says he is definitely part basenji. He doesn't seem to show any of the 'cat like aloofness' my research says many basenji have, but due to his appearance I still think he is.

    He is about a year old and ways about 11 pounds (small, but big compared to my granddad 6 pound chiweenie) and maybe nine or ten inches tall (haven't measured so this may be inaccurate). He can yowl (is that what it's called?) but he has also barked on one occasion while we were at a swimming pool and my brothers were jumping in (will include link).

    @MacPack: Dusty is darling1 How great that you ignored the trainer and figured out your little guy. They can be so smart that they "fake it" in many ways, making it hard to realize they are deaf, or don't see well. Kudos to you for being such a great mom! Thank you, I think he's a doll myself but I'm partial. You know with him not being able to hear he is very visual and he will watch TV with me. I find that so interesting. He likes animated movies like the ones from Pixar, I can not watch any program with dogs, cats, horses, cows, bears or basically any animal because he starts barking like he is going to be attacked at any given moment. But if we are outside, and we see dogs or other animals he doesn't do anything. Maybe he is just protecting his turf when he's inside. When I tell people that he is deaf, they always say 'oh poor thing' and I always tell them that he doesn't know anything different so he's fine. If he had been able to hear and the lost his hearing that would be much harder for him. But he's really smart and picked up on my sign language very quickly, so he's happy. I'm happy too. Although when he's being a bit unruly I find myself scolding him then I laugh because he can't hear me. Then I tell him 'lucky for you that you can't hear me mister' and I laugh.

    It sounds like a contact allergy to me. The dog's stomach is touching something it is allergic too. Like Ruth said, grass or weeds that may (or may not) have chemicals on them. The fabric of your couch or type of carpet you have Cleaning products used to clean carpets or floors Fabric softeners, dryer sheets, or laundry detergents used on the dog's bedding or other items the dog is frequently in contact with. Topical flea products used on the dog And the list goes on I do not trust a vet who wants to hand out drugs and medications without attempting to find out the cause of the medical problem. I would recommend going to a holistic vet that will help you get to the root of the problem.

    Thank you all for your comments, went away for a few days on a beach a few hours away from home, and took photos;will have to learn to put them on the forum now. By tomorrow, some of mon petit monstre sera sur le forum. She loved the beach and spent hours playing and looking at the sea. What energy!! I was exhausted but she kept going and then fall asleep suddenly, not wanting to leave the soft sand bed. A real pleasure to have so much space and time to play!
