    Newsom is 14 weeks now and is a GREAT boy. I'm loving him so much every day and he and Shango are getting along great, bringing smiles all around.

    Newsom is a very good puppy and sleeps all through the night without going to the bathroom in his crate. I take him out first thing and he goes right outside and is rewarded.

    But.

    He has a habit of going to the bathroom in his crate throughout the day. I try to give him cool-down and nap times in his crate (which he goes into by himself. He really seems to love napping and hanging out in his crate…) and to be honest, I can't really figure out when he does it as I watch him really carefully but I'll peek into the crate and inevitable, there's a pee puddle. (and tonight, a little bit of poop). It's super frustrating and I don't know what to do....

    Is the crate too big? He should be able to lay down and turn around but doesn't need more room when potty training. That way it is harder for him to stay out of the mess if he makes one. This method usually works because dogs, especially the typical basenji don't like to be dirty.

    Also make sure to withhold food and water prior to crating and make sure he has had time to process and eliminate any intake.

    You probably already know this, but thats how I would start! :)

    What were his living conditions like were you got him from? Usually depending on the pups age, there is usually a clue there.

    For example (and I am not saying that he is from a puppy miller)… but puppy mill dogs live in cages, eat in cages, poop in cages... they don't know any different... hence really harder to house train as peeing/pooping in a crate is natural for them. Same with a pet store puppy. So sometimes you need to look at those kinds of things when trying to figure out how to solve a problem. And sometimes you never can....

    Thanks for the input you guys-

    The crate is not too big, it's the right size for him which is why I am so confused about why he's doing it. And he's NOT from a puppy mill, but was born to a home with a lot of acreage where he had a lot of outside time to run and play on a lot of land….

    Do you feed him in his crate? He will be unlikely to pee/poo where he eats. Make sure he has had a potty break before going into his crate to eat. Then, TONS of praise when you let him out.

    He does not eat in his crate. Thanks for this idea! Will try it!

    @beth314 - I think the issue with a Basenji doing Earthdog is that those dogs go underground to seek their prey.... (as in for trials they make tunnels and the prey is in cages at the end).... and that is not an activity that Basenjis really do. They might try to get to the prey by digging on the top of the ground, but going underground I don't think so.

    Stop with the free feeding... this is a dog that needs to be on a schedule. And a cup and a half might be too much for a 20lb dog. Try reducing it to a cup. I have also found that feeding 2x's a dog is better than once a day. I have never let my dogs free feed. Once he is on a schedule you can mostly determine when he should have to go... and then you take him out and stay out till he goes. A trick you can use (many don't like this but I will put it out there) is what people that show use. Insert a match in his bum half way.... This will stimulate him to go, when he does praise/treat him. And until he gets the idea, you will need to keep him crated or on leash. You can search the forum for other conversations about using a match to stimulate. Search for match trick

    Have you tried a soft crate. I don't know if you can get them in the US, but this is the website I got mine from : http://www.oo.com.au/Collapsible_Pet_Travel_Cage_wi_P37265.cfm . I have two basenjis and they both sleep in it at night and whenever I need to take them on a drive I use this. There are no hard or sharp pieces and the dogs have not been able to chew it to pieces yet (touch wood).

    @SNA: Thank you very much for your comments. I probably have been expecting too much of her. I had a think about what had changed for her to be so obstinate, and I realised that I had been going without my kids. Good for me as it's less work, but my four year old, I realised, was excellent at getting her going again when she stopped, simply by walking ahead, and, if needed, calling her name. Taking my four year old son also means taking my 20 month old daughter in the sling, but at least we can do our 20-30 minute walk around the block. Now I just have to think of a way of convincing my once enthusiastic son who now complains of being tired and who doesn't want to go, of coming on the walk every day! LOL at carrying Dallas, I have to do that with Jessie nearly every time at the end too! Does your puppy have a favorite toy? If so put it in your back pocket and then put the leash on your pet and see how that works. Just make sure your pet cannot get it by jumping. In fact you can make a game of it by playing in your home with the toy and the dog for a about 5 mins before you walk. If your dog likes squeekie toys then you can also buy a replacement squeekie and keep it in your pocket. When you are walking and want the dogs attention you can squeek it inside your pocket. We use Martingale Collar's. Our Basenji seems to tolerate this style well. I also have noticed that leash control is very important when walking my Basenji. For that purpose I use a regular type 6 foot lead that I can wrap around my hand when I wish to take more control of my dog. I also have a very short lead ( about 2 feet or maybe less) that I use when I want the dog to concentrate on walking next to me. After my dog gets his business done, we are all about a constant pace walking. My perception is that if we are out for a walk to exercise him that we should concentrate on that aspect. I also have a 20 foot lead that I do use when we go on a leisure type walk. On that type of walk, I usually allow him to sniff and explore but I keep moving. He might run ahead slightly but then he will stop and wait and then do it again. The only time I use a flexie type or retractable leash is when I am going to let him have the room to run in a circle. Of course like any dog, the more rope or leash you give them the more they will take advantage of. My puppy does not walk perfectly, but what he does is pretty tolerable. After he does his business and we get our first 1 1/2 miles in, he settles down and gets the next 1 1/2 mile in quite nicely. Of course we did not start at that distance but we did start with at least a 1 to 1 1/2 miles when he was a little over 8 weeks old. After the walk, we worked on sit, stay, come, and lay down for about 10 to 15 mins. I always treated him with a couple of cheerio's or something similar directly after the walk. Actually he refused to drink any water until he got his cheerios. Hope this helps, Jason

    We are training our new puppy and it reminded me of somehting I did somewhat by accident with our other 2 dogs. When we wer etrying to get them to go, we always give them a treat. At some point of frustration, I tried to get their attention and let them know we had a treat by shaking th etreat jar. Eventually, they associated the shaking sound with going potty, so with the new puppy, I started shaking the jar every time she was actually going. After just 10 days, I can shake the jar and it gets her attention and makes her pee usually, even when she is distracted and walking all around.

    Yes husbands can be a trial at times. When my Kalya was dying from lymphoma hubby said no dogs for awhile! Kalya left on tues. for the bridge, on sat. we got a Basenji/Aussie mix, who was gonna be put down, and then3 months later got Mata Hauri Samuel to co-own. Now hubby is going in sept to the BOCA to see the african exhibit and meet some friends. Said he would love to at least see a tri! ggggg Carole
