Basenji and a bird

Basenji Talk
  • Does anyone have a basenji and a oet bird? My dog doesnt really care for the bird unless she flies!! Any advice or stories?

  • My previous basenji killed several wild birds (much to my dismay) and I would not have been surprised if he attempted to kill pet ones. I have a friend who raises parrots and some of them are so large that I think they could do more damage to a B than the other way around!

Looks can be so deceiving- here is an article of a woman who adopted a rescue dog in N.J. Dog looks like a basenji - even her vet thought it might be basenji. She did an Embark DNA test - no basenji. Turned out the dog was a mixture of Mountain Cur, Rat Terrier, Beagle, and Boston Terrier. link text

@Thana: she does have basenji characteristics then apart from her colours and looks.- i also think she must have some basenji blood! She is lovely and lucky no matter what! adorable little face:))))) Having read about the characteristics I think she does. The lady with the basenji that we met also commented on some of the things she was doing as "very basenji" (eg. standing on her back legs so she could see what was going on). Has a lovely wrinkly forehead too. Got very frustrated with me earlier and did her funny bark, more of a wierd howl really. She is def one of a kind. Its a shame we have to have her spayed (not that I could ever justify letting her have a litter).

lol usually when you breed a bigger dog to a smaller dog the Male is the tiny one. Its just dangerous to do it the other way around. As far as DNA breed testing I would go for it if I could. But i am just interested in those kinds of tests. We offer them at our clinic but i haven't ever seen results for them.

I have three birds, all of them game birds, an indian runner duck and two button quail (pets for me though) and while very cautious when they are around the dogs I have never (yet) had a problem with Zumi (my B) being too rough or killing them. I think he realizes these birds are MINE and are not to be touched unless I let him. he does like to chase the birds outside though, like robins, finches. oh and hte chickadees, they are a favorite as they play back!. he respects their space, my duck gave him a nice peck on the tail and he stays away now. my birds do not fly, per se, I have clipped the flight feathers on my quail and my duck is a ground duck, it cannot fly, its a baby yet anyways. Zumi dislikes the quail as they do a sort of odd "squee!" sound that he hates if he gets too close. I let all the birds out for a few hours everyday, and the dog I am worried about most is my chow chow, who is very prey-driven, Zumi has never touched my birds yet, but i would never let them loose in the house with the dogs without me right there. Zumi also gets along great with my rat for some reason, they slept together even, odd little dogs B's. ~Charlene

@phoenix3: Looks like a B to me but i think more of a B mix he looks like he has corse hair Maybe be has the size of a cattledog body and a basenji head :) My Aspen is a cattledog/ terrier mix he has the body of a cattledog {the colors} and the height and face of a terrier heres a pic so u can see the colors of the cattledog well one color anyways :D :D phoenix3 - this is Aspen? I'm so amazed at her spots, because my Daisy has spots like Aspens. We know her mother is pure R/W Basenji and she is thought her other half Beagle. One of her other litter mate moms thought Blue Healer (cattledog). But I subscribed to the Beagle. Daisy could be … Cattle Dog I suppose. She's bigger than Duke now at almost 9 months old. I will show her off soon on "Show Off" forum soon.
