Should I change his diet?

Basenji Feeding
  • Hello everyone!

My 2-1/2 yr old male basenji has been on a Purina Pro Plan lamb and rice diet since the latter part of last year at the advice of my vet. He has very dry skin and has had demodectic mange in the past. I also add a supplement to his food to improve his skin condition. His skin and hair have improved tremendously!

Cristo occasionally gets bile vomiting in the morning because he does not always eat when he should (I don't think he is crazy about the food). I think he also has a sensitive stomach. He recently had vomiting and diarrhea (either from something he ate or he caught a bug). He has been on on id canned food for the past 3-4 days and he loves it. Does anyone have a basenji on strictly id dry and wet food? Since he enjoys it so much, why not keep him on it?

    Thanks for your help!

  • Is that the name ID or is it IVD? Just wondering since I just switched to IVD-Rabbit due to my B's allergies to everything under the sun.

  • It's i/d for dogs.

  • I'm trying the Innuvo EVO. It's high protein/lo carbs. My good friend (APU Basenjis) who has been a breeder since 1973 recommends it.

  • The i/d is pretty darn expensive. And I prefer not to feed wet food for three reasons: dry is better for their teeth, wet stinks, and it makes their poop smell worse ;)

But it sounds like he has some intestinal issues, so I would go with the advice of your vet.

  • There is also a low fat EVO that is meat and fruit, no grains… I have been slowly changing mine to it and they are doing great... but until you have the intestinal issues under control, I would keep him on that if that is what your Vet is recommending. And for the skin you can get 3V Caps.. they are a great supplement

First, I want to say that my B has liver disease, not kidney…but he is also supposed to be on a low protein diet. He was diagnosed at age 11...he is 15 now! The vet initially suggested Science Diet, and Senji would rather starve to death than eat that, but I digress. To get to the point, I cook for him. Usually boiled chicken or turkey, white meat or legs. The organ meat or red meat stresses his liver. I add rice and vegetables to the broth. He grew up eating mostly Pedigree, but they keep changing the formula. I put a little bit of dry dog food down and then the rice/meat mixture on top. If he doesn't eat the dry dog food, he tends to get runny stools. Throw in any vegetable you think your B will eat, such as carrots, green beans, zucchini, peas, etc. (No mushrooms or onions!)He also likes to eat scrambled egg, cottage cheese or yogurt. Occasionally, he'll eat some white fish or salmon too. His coat looks great and he still runs around like a pup!

I tried answering via my phone, but I guess it didn't work. I usually don't measure but mix it all into their meats, or kibble if they are on it. They love quinoa, shoot they love anything coming from the kitchen..:) Usually a few times a week, to maybe three times a week, veggies they get daily and green smoothies, at least Otis, he adores my green smoothies.

@AndrewnShango: …A similar situation happened not long ago with the food brand "Canidae" and many, many dogs had digestive issues due to the change in recipe. I urge you to contact them if there are issues... I'm glad you mentioned this, because Canidae was my other favorite brand…

Giardia can actually be very difficult to clear up. What medication did the vet use? Did they keep prescribing the same medication or did they try something else to see if Benga responded better to another? I know that with Nicky we had tried Flagyl but it would recur and then tried Panacur and it finally cleared up. As for the food if you are looking for something less rich, try California Natural. It is made by the same company as Evo but is not as rich as Evo.

If they are too hard - how about adding some Flax Seed - I'm think that more fiber might help. or a small bit of Karo Syrup.
