Bark for Life - American Cancer Society - Sat. 10-20-2012 in Chino Hills, CA

Off Topic
  • My Basenjis (Taj and Tag) and I are gearing up for the American Cancer Society Bark for Life at Chino Hills, CA to be held one week from today. We will be participating in a day of fun to raise money to help fight cancer and to honor all who have had their lives changed by cancer in one way or another. Whether you're a survivor, have a loved one who is a survivor, or have lost a friend or family member to cancer, you can make a difference in this fight.

Even though ACS focuses on human cancer, one of the honorees of my team's Bark walk is Taj's beautiful and beloved litter sister, Banners (Savannah), who passed away from cancer nearly 3 months ago.

I know most Basenji Forums members cannot attend this event in person, but you can do the Bark with us in spirit by donating to our team. Just as the nickels and pennies and dimes in your change jar eventually add up to dollars, so can small donations to ACS turn into a significant amount. Please consider supporting Banners' Brigade 2. Thanks.

Before Watson I had a spaniel and I still have a collie… I love the short wash and wear coat on the basenji :) Just think of a collie with a thick double coat rolling in yuckiness ;)

So, I guess I couldn't have seen you in my recent trip throught the city of flying pigs (for those unaware, there is one). Two hours of stop and go southbound, trying to get to the airport. I was in the backseat and looked at every truck on the off chance there might be an AJ sighting. Obviously, no luck, as you were a few time zones away :) Had I seen AJ, I might have jumped out of the car I was in and jumped into your truck for a couple of miles…just to say 'Hi'...that's how slow going it was. My advise, for north or southbound, take the by-pass...but what do I know? There were plenty of trucks willing to wade through the traffic.

I would like to have them take a look at that pet store I got AJ's new food from in Bradenton, Florida…Petland 3530 53rd Ave W. When I got the food, there were at least 50 puppies for sale in there, mostly small breeds and some of them with wet eyes and brown staining around the eyes. Puppies doubled and tripled in cages and advertising for payment plans to buy the pups. I asked whether they ever got Basenjis in there....the owner said he hadn't yet but could order one for me. HUH??? How could I possibly purchase a puppy who I had no idea what its history was, where it came from, who its parents were....And how does a retail pet store "order" a Basenji? I almost returned all the food I bought, but AJ needed it and I can't just go to a pet store whenever I want to. I was a little miffed about it. Yeah, I know...I sound like a hypocrit because I took AJ without meeting his parents and all that, but I think it was a slightly different situation. He's my rescue boy and I do know his history.

We are learning in California how critical it is to stand together to lobby for our right to own healthy, well bred pets. The bill did pass out of the Assembly to the Senate but the vote was much closer than I think anyone thought it would be when the bill was first proposed. We still have to stay loud and keep writing letters and keep letting California businesses and politicians know how much responsible pet owners contribute to this state and how much money the state stands to lose over this legislation since money talks.
