Watch me escape from my crate

Behavioral Issues
  • That is pretty cute! But also quite important for the human to know. I need to ask a question here - and I am not making any negative comments about the owner. I just need all the knowledge I can get in prep for my first basenji. For a basenji that size, would they benefit from a bigger crate than that? Thanks for your help.

  • Lol, I've seen escape videos and they ALWAYS involve getting that bottom tray out and turning the cage on it's side so the dog can walk out the side - crazy how s/he kept trying for so long! I've video'd Paco and he gives up after about 6 minutes.

    For a wire crate I have a 30"L x 19"W x 21"H and a plastic crate the Vari Kennel 400 36x24x27.

  • For house use I use the same size as Dan, for travel (in the SUV) I use a wire but a size smaller. I think that when you have to leave your B in a crate at home while at work, etc… a bigger one would be a better choice with a little more room for moving around... but since we have a dog room with a doggy door to the backyard, I don't have to worry about crating mine when at work.

  • I'm the owner of this dog in the video. This crate is a fine size for him because any larger one's he tries to potty in them when he gets frustrated. He ALWAYS has a blanket in there and toys as well but they were in the wash. In a bigger crate he potties in it. But a smaller one he WONT because he doesn't want to be in the same space as the feces. My vet told me to keep him in a smaller crate. He always goes potty outside before I crate him but STILL goes IN his crate when its a large one. Also too he's never crated for more than 2 hrs tops. I work at home so I am home all the time. When I AM home he has free run of my apartment. So please no criticizing when you do not know the whole situation.

Story behind the video: I would kennel him when I leave. Twice in a row Id come home to find him on the couch sleeping and I wondered how he did it. So eventually I set up the hidden camera in the corner of the living room on top of my fireplace. I got 30min of video. And edited it down. Shows how you CANNOT underestimate a Basenji.

  • Thats hilarious…

  • Anubis's Mom - thanks for your reply. With the possibility of Anubis pooping in a larger crate, I can see how the smaller crate works out best for you. I'll keep this in mind for future reference.

I think it depends on the dog. It is funny, but yep the bear hug has worked with both Sayblee and Cara when they were into the wilds. (Arwen never gets wild in any way… far too dignified to be like that thank you!) If bear hugs escalates or they seriously try to bite you, then it isn't working. But most do hate being restrained enough that they get it. In fact I'd rather restrain than ever use a crate for PUNISHMENT. Now if you used the crate just to make him sleep in, yeah. But bad behavior then in crate sets up a bad connection. Hope things continue to go well.

She has a Kong and a chewy squeaker in there with her… Most of the time she has is tired out by the time we put her in there... It's weird b/c all of the times we've had incidents she had plenty of play time before the crate... our weekly morning routine is that i feed her and take her our before work and she gets back in bed with zack and sleeps another hour or so before he goes to work... She never chews anything during this type of routine... Seems to be happening on weekends on days off from work.

It's true, I've never had to even think about crating until I got Oakley. All previous breeds were no problem staying loose in the house, oak is very house destructive so that was a no go, we also went through crate phobia but at 16 months he tolerates it better than I ever imagined

mine are all in the same room - it's the den and has a large sliding glass door so everyone can see out. Digital, the brindlewonderkid, is left to go where ever he likes. Usually he's in the den or bedroom.
