    There's been a basenji around ever since I can remember. Lady was the first one – she was the same age I was but she died when she was 3. I still remember her, she was playfull and gangly. She got hit by a car, she escaped and got hit by a car on a country road that had about six cars on it a day. Bad timing. A bit later we got Amber, she was the dog I grew up with. Amber was wicked smart, she figured out a lot of stuff dogs wouldn't normally figure out. She died when she was 16. Now I have Nikky. She's 12 now but she's still pretty lively. She's really allergic to wheat so we have to be very careful about what she eats -- and she gets lots of long walks (she loves exploring and checking her pee mail) but she's still a bit pudgy. The vet says she's in pretty good health though.... I'll put pictures of her up if everyone promises not to make fun of her! -- when she was younger she could have kicked all of your taught little basenji's asses! Oh yeah -- and Nikky gets along with most dogs -- as long as they are not little white dogs -- I tried to tell her she was being a racist, but she didn't understand.

    Yeah my B's hate Boxers. I have tried to tell them they Boxers are just doggies too, went through one ear and out the other. Much like the other things I have tried to teach my B's. Welcome to the forum and yes we all love pictures and would love to see some of her!

    As mine age I try to keep a bit of weight on them because I know they may reach a stage when they just don't keep weight as the organs weaken.

It may not seem important now - you can say you will never show or need to register your Basenji - but in a few year's time you may find you wish you had known the health test results of the parents. By constant checking and careful breeding, many lines have obviated the most devastating scourges, but they are still around. Better to know for sure if your puppy is tested and imperative to make certain his or her parents were.

    He's a hungry dog today. Gave him 1/2 cup in the morning and just a few minutes ago. He had no problem eating. I'm much more happy that he's eating now. He likes his bone as well. Not too much into the Kong yet. I just wish he didn't cry in his crate when I put him in there. Feel bad for him but I know it just takes adjusting. He is perfectly fine when I return home after he's been in there awhile. It's just the initial time. To be honest though, this transition went far better than I expected. I was prepared for the worst. This little guy has done very well.

    @cmd: Our 12yr old Ramsey is from one of Linda's Basenji's and a very sweet guy. Have you tried Hacker's Basenji's? Ann is an active and very responsible breeder and she's near Danville. I can't say enough good things about her. We've had 2 of her dogs and both have had great temperaments. She's friends with a lot of other breeders in the area as well. If she doesn't have any available you could also try Select Basenji's near Dayton. I think she was co-breeding last year. We have a Select and she's a great little dog – a ball of energy though! I too was looking for a Basenji last year at this time. We lost our 14 yr old also year to date and felt a puppy would help everyone move on. Sort of became a mission. Puppies can be hard to come by this late, but we did find several. Nope, Tracy's breeding didn't take this year…but I think she is planning one for spring :)
