What age for nursing pups and what mix?

  • Hi All,

I have some ideas about what to do for this but I was really interested in hearing new techniques or updated info. Our pups are 3 weeks old and growing nicely. At what age do you like to supplement nursing with prepared food and what do you like to prepare? Thanks in advance.

    Jeff

  • I start as soon as the eyes open… but it is really not till they are about 4wks that they really will show much interest in eating "slop" on their own. After the eyes open I just make a slop mix and let them slurp it off my fingers. To really get them interested in eating I make a mix of ground meat, honey and raw egg.

  • I do as Pat but normally start with ground meat only. I feed them in my lap one at a time and its a great way to get them used to being handled.

I only ever supplement nursing and leave it to Mum to wean them naturally. It then makes for a smooth transition.

  • I agree with weaning them naturally….

  • Thank your for the advice.

  • Well my B mix babies are 3wks old and I gave them some food…canned puppy food and they INHALED it! Well ate it and kinda spread it all over my kitchen lol. BIG mess...I gave them a little to see if they had interest and boy did they! All 9 were eating it up good!

  • Once the eyes open, I start mine on food, however I grind up kibble into a powder and mix with milk replacement till it is like thick, thick soup. Then I let them lick it off my fingers…. they catch on pretty quickly.

Then by about 3 1/2 wks they are pretty good at eating this a few times a day. Try and time it so that they are offered the food before they nurse.

You do not have to ask BRAT. Did you get her from a foster on the East Coast-possibly SC or from MO? Was she with her mom and her littermates? Jennifer

Hi there. I was about to post this question and did a search for this topic. It's been a while now! I am curious how running with a Basenji turned out? We are considering a Basenji and my husband wants it to be a running partner.

Thank you Tanza. I was very curious. ill have to check out AKC. Thank you AgileBasenji. Yes i do live here so it would just be for fun and for some experience. I dont blame you on the points tho because it would be alot of money to not get anything out of it.

Welcome to the forum circlemama, i understand how you feel about taking the Pup away from family because we felt exactly the same a few weeks ago. Before we picked Malaika up i kept thinking about it but knew in the back of my mind that this was the order of things, after all the breeder wasn't going to keep all the pups so staying in her canine family wasn't an option. Before we left the breeders house we told Malaika's mum we would look after her, and yes i know she didn't understand the words but i needed to say it anyway ;) Once home she oly took a few days to settle and now it's like she's always been here. Like you we considered two Pups but i'm so glad we didn't get two at once. It is a full time job looking after Malaika and having a Pup in the house again was a huge change. We do plan to get another Basenji in the future.

My teething toys of choice? My leather belt (he loves because it is long and moves around) and the bleached cylindrical bones that have peanut butter inside for licking. That settles down his teething urges a bit. A little spray of the water will stop any unruley behavior pronto! He was chewing my floor mat in the kitchen.
