Completely unknown pedigree: still testable?

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Hi everyone,

Sorry if this has been asked before. I'm a newbie (said hi over in member intros) and still exploring. Anyway, we have a five-year-old red and white female who just joined our home. She's been through at least two other owners and has never been Fanconi tested. She came with no papers and minimal health records, and I don't think it's going to be possible to trace her pedigree. It should still be possible to submit a DNA test for her, right? Does anyone know how this would affect the certainty of the results?

I've e-mailed OFA directly to ask, but haven't received a response yet. I thought you folks would be quicker and just as knowledgeable. We'll also be going to the vet later this week, but I wanted to know a little more before going in.

    Thanks everyone.

  • Yes, any Basenji can be tested, no papers needed. You will need to make up a registration number to be used. You might want to use something like Rescue #1 or something that would ID her being from rescue and no details on pedigree. And it doesn't effect the results, just no information about littermates/sire/dam, etc….

The DNA for Fanconi is not done by the Vet, it is a cheek swab that you do yourself and send in. www.basenjihealth.org has much information on the test.

  • Yeah, when I did Cody's I had absolutely no records and I just used his name "Cody". I left all the stuff I didn't have blank, like registration, sire, dam, etc.

  • Great, that's what I thought. A DNA test is a DNA test, after all.

This missing info just gave me pause when I was attempting to order the cheek swab test from OFA, since you have to input all that information when you're ordering the kit. I guess there's no reason to enter her info into the Canine Phenome Project as well?

    Yes, exactly

  • Good for you! Caring about what is going to happen to your new dog is a sign your a wonderful owner.
Let us know how your test comes out..hopefully, we will all be cheering with you, the good results.

  • Yep.. no reg number of any kind required. they will give the dog a number of sorts.
You can look up "Cha Cha" a rescue that I had.. I actually had her papers so put the parents down.
My last rescue before her "Buddy" didn't have parents listed… just BUDDY.

  • silly question, but would a non basenji be able to be tested? I know basenji crosses can be dna tested but what about other breeds?
I ask this because in another breed I have there are a number of siblings and a dam who have all passed away with various kidney disorders. Different vets so no uniformity of diagnosis.

We are now strip testing the remaining siblings but would be interested if we could rule out fanconi.
    thanks

Did she always have them or did they start after something/some time? Do antihistamines clear the problem?

@elbrant said in Bordatella and Canine Influenza Vaccines: @Saving said in Bordatella and Canine Influenza Vaccines: divisive I guess I'm a dreamer.... but I believe that adults can have discussions and opinions without resorting to name calling and rude remarks. Your input is valuable. Thanks, because it's become a religion as soon as you speak against it people get so offended. The last 3 years has shown that quite clearly @Saving said in Bordatella and Canine Influenza Vaccines: Another friend's dog has a swollen leg at the vaccination site of his booster which is not resolving I"m sorry to hear about your friend's loss and understand the concern about the other friend's swollen leg. I had a similar experience, one of my dog's (not doodle) had a grossly swollen leg following a vet visit. The Vet told me it was cancer and I opted to let her go. Month's later I read online that it could have been the result of an allergic reaction. Please advise your friend to research possible answers before she makes a decision. Will do, a lot of the medication/vaccines cause inflammatory responses so it could just be that, it's still not nice for the dog to have that experience @Saving said in Bordatella and Canine Influenza Vaccines: dry food ... suffering from malnutrition omgosh! That is so scary!! I doubt the big manufacturers would ever allow a real study to see the light of day, but I would love to see one done. Just the thought makes me want to keep feeding my girl human grade foods. Yeah the same here, her research indicated that raw chicken wings were the optimal food and contain pretty much everything needed. I guess if you think of some of the processed crap they have in supermarkets trading as food for humans you can imagine how low the bar can go for pet food.

@Rebel - Full blood workup including full Thyroid panel (full panel no just what the normal vet workup that is not a full thyroid panel)... as they say make sure that he is in good health. Also what are you feeding him? How much total are you feeding a day? Also with reducing food, add veggies to his food to fill his belly... green beans are good to use... I use Cauliflower and Broccoli... Note also that low normal is typically too low for Basenjis.
