  • Hi-I'm Nancy Scott, the willing slave of the sweetest little b girl named Cassie who we adopted through BRAT in December of 2010. Cassie is the lights of our lives-she is a typical b…sleeps between us in bed....races around doing the b500...easily seduced by food...

We live in FLorida on a small island in the Gulf of Mexico-it is a very dog friendly place, so Cas has been patted and welcomed everywhere we go. And I have had the opportunity to do lots of impromptu lectures on Basenjis for people who ask questions when we meet them on walks around the island.
Cassie has befriended our mail carrier, who leaves abiscuit for her in the mailbox, and all the owners at the dog park. She is smaller than almost anyone there, but her speed and agility always draw interest.

Right now she is curled up snoring beside me as I type this. I love meeting and and reading notes from other Basenji owners. Everyone seems extraordinarily nice. Thanks for the welcome. I think Cassie and I are going to be very happy!!!

    Nancy

  • Welcome Nancy and Cassie, glad to have both of you onboard. Sounds like Cas is living the dream with you in Florida…lucky girl.

  • I love the name basenjmamma! I feel the same way! Thanks for the warm welcome.

  • Welcome Nancy and Cassie! We are in the Tampa area, are you near-by? We have a Sunday meet up at a dog park and are always happy to see new folks. One of mine is a BRAT (from 10 years ago).

  • Hello and welcome from Canada! Your Island sounds like a wonderful place!

  • Welcome :)

  • Welcome to you and Cassie.

Congrats... all good questions... should start with your breeder. I do not feed puppy food, mine eat adult food and I only use grain free. I also change up foods every 3 to 4 weeks that way I never have a problem introducing new foods. Veggies are a favorite as are most fruits... Who are you getting your puppy from? Many of us are related by our Basenjis pedigrees

Please research the health problems in Basenjis especially Fanconi Syndrome! There is a DNA cheek swab test for it and I believe it only costs $75. If your dog has not been tested and is over two years old, she needs to be strip tested for glucose in the urine monthly until you have the DNA test done and obtain the results. Untreated Fanconi Syndrome will kill a dog! Here is a webpage that explains health problems in Basenjis: https://www.basenji.org/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=155&Itemid=292 Jennifer

Welcome! I have seen red and white Shibas that looked just like a long haired basenji. You could have a shiba-basenji mix, perhaps. He is a very cute dog, I see why you are in love. They are hard to resist! For about $60 there is a DNA test if you are really curious…..

Admittedly Basenjis and sheep are a problem. Thank you for such friendly welcomes. I have had some Basenjis who I did eventually manage to 'train'!!? to be safe with sheep and could wander among them and occasionally help to herd, others (including my current pack are killers and can't be left to wander freely where the sheep are. We have a double gate system for visitors. There was a time when I could have taken them all out for walks together but now I take them 3 at a time and my whole day is taken up with exercising dogs. When I get the hang of my digital camera I'll post some piccies. Nomrdggs - I'm not sure I have kept my sanity!!!! Tanza - I have actually seen some of our original imports - and I have attempted to breed as close to the original type as I can. I bred my last litter 4 years ago.
