Bringing home our new girl

We lost our 10 year old red and white basenji girl in January to cancer. We contacted our breeder to let her know what happened and to also be put on the list for her next litter. She sent us a picture of a brindle girl available from a Dec. 12th litter. Needless to say we fell in love instantly and we will be picking her up this weekend. I'm happy to have found this forum as I'm sure I'll have a lot of questions about starting over with a puppy.

Welcome! She is darling, congratulations on your new baby, and condolences on your loss. What part of Fl are you in? We are in the Tampa area and have a basenji dog park group that meets up every week, we had 19 last Sunday! Would love to meet you and your new girl.

We are in Orlando but have family in Tampa. I was just there last weekend for the Gasparilla 1/2 marathon. Where do you meet? I'll be sure to let you know the next time we are in town.

Maggie has been home for 1 week. Going from a 10 year old basenji to a 3 month old has been entertaining and challenging. Maggie was born in Virginia and because of all the snow they had she has been litter box trained. We are working hard to transition her out to the yard. She was doing very well but has backtracked the last couple of days. We had a lot of rain and I'm hoping she just doesn't like the wet yard. She's taken to our 3 kids as she has constant entertainment. She's sleeping well at night in her crate which we are very pleased about. All is all it's going very well. Once we get all her shots it's off to puppy class in hopes of training her to walk and run on leash.

Question to all the experts out there - is it such a bad thing to have your basenji litter trained (in addition to having them 'go' outside)? I could see where JUST having your basenji litter trained might cause a problem, as when you're out on a good walk you don't want them to hold everything inside until you get back home. I have read of some basenjis being litter trained, so am interested in everyone's comments.

Nothing wrong IMO to having them litter trained…. I really don't worry about it here in California, as we typically have mild enough winters to start putting them out a 4/5 wks... so mine are well started on potty outside pretty early. I also try to stay away from using paper at a fairly young age, as it is difficult to then switch them to outside... as in any paper on the floor will do...

Thanks, Pat. Being in British Columbia, we do have lots of rain in the late winter/spring - which is the time a basenji pup would be newly in the home. As I'm already cleaning a litter box (with clumpable litter) for the cats, cleaning another one would not be a big deal for me. That said, I would like the puppy to also relieve himself outdoors on nice long walks. Since a new puppy would have probably had training by the breeder, I wonder how much work it would be to then incorporate a litter box. So many questions when you are new to the world of basenjis! I am also in the process of reading past posts using the search feature on this forum. It looks like I am not the only person that has been interested in litter training. But I would like to hear from people who also think it might be dumb. I prefer honesty. Thanks everyone!

We got her from Damara Bolte of Reveille Kennels. It is the same kennel we purchased our first basenji girl from over 10 years ago (we were living in Virginia at the time). It was really neat to go back after such a long time and see Damara again and all her basenjis.

What is her breeding? I just brought home three new puppies, two are sired by Ch Reveille Push The Limit To MV… (only two are living with me, one with one of my other puppy owners)

Maggie's mom is Ch Reveille Solo Pilot (she's in one of the pictures I posted). Her dad is Clear N Present Danger (first litter for both dogs).

My 15mo (Aaliyah) was litter trained. I had no problem transitioning her to outdoors. I initially had 2 litter boxes set up - 1 upstairs (in an xpen with her crate) and 1 downstairs. Almost immediately she preferred to go outside - only ever pooped in the house (in the litter box) once. So I removed the one downstairs and kept the one upstairs until she now longer used it (around 6 mo). There was no confusion at all about going outside - when she was out, she went - especially if on a walk - because of the excitement.
I'm in Maine - so it was cold and snowy when she first came home - really, really snowy last winter. She loved being outside and was always the last one to want to come in. I actually credit her not having any care about weather (snow or rain) because she started playing outside at 12 weeks. To this day even if it is pouring she doesn't put up a fuss about going out and is actually excited - unlike my other 2 who go out begrudgingly.
Oh, and I used Equine Pine pellets for the litter box. Same as Feline Pine, but can the Equine version can be purchased in 30lb bags at Tractor Supply for about $6 a bag.

She looks so cute. I know your house will be filled with laughter, amazement, curiosity and some tough love too…lol.
I am sorry to hear of your older dog, it is hard to loose them, but the love and company you have is so intense and happy, even if for a short time.
We lost one of our 13 yr old dogs exactly a year ago today..it still hurts.
