    So Maverick can ONLY eat one cup of dog food a day, if I even try and split it up or give him even a 1/4th a cup more at bedtime, he throws it up… Not normal right? I asked out vet (but he doesnt have experience with Basenjis.. but that doesnt matter we have to find a new vet out here in Hawaii!) and I was told one cup it plenty half in am half in pm and he IS gaining weight never losing any... so Im not TOO concerned, just wondering why he gets sick if he has more... Its weird.

    If once a day works for him, nothing wrong with that. I would not worry as long as he is not losing weight.

    Does he 'wolf' it down or does he eat it slow? If he eats too fast a vomit may occur or if he gets too much exercise or excitement an hour before and after. A dog will vomit out of survival. Get rid of the stomach contents before a fight or flight, or exercise or a drastic change in routine and environment. As this is apparently not the scenario in your case, is there anything else you notice. Like Pat said, if he is not loosing weight….But, I just thought of something, are you positive he didn't fill his belly up with something else? From somewhere or someone else?????? Just an objective thought...! Let us know....Debbie

    I feed twice a day. When Lola was a puppy, she would eat so fast she would throw up at every single meal. I bought a bowl with little dividers in it that forced her to eat slowly. She immediately stopped throwing up. She had to use that bowl for over a year before she learned to pace herself, and now she can finally use a regular bowl without throwing up.

    @lustopher No ! they will gum them if they can't chew and it all helps with teething.

    Not sure how Xylitol is being marketed. It is an alcohol found in a lot of plants, including birch wood, which is the source of Xylitol used in medicines. And it is toxic to dogs, even in small amounts. Most of the time you find it in sugarless gum and candy.     I would find out what he scared of or what he dislikes about the car. Is it the car itself, the sensation of being closed in, the movement when the car is being driven? Then work on whatever the problem is, with food. As for food, I use raw duck and vegetables. And I hand-feed all meals, so I never have a problem with not eating/partially eating. I would also recommend hand-feeding for anyone who does have a dog with food issues. Shredded chicken is good (as long as he doesn't have any reactions). But that and some kibble isn't a balanced meal. You may wish to look into a vitamin supplement, specifically something that has a focus on omega 3 (since chicken is high in omega 6), Vitamin C & the B vitamins (because if all he's eating is chicken and kibble, where is his source of vitamin C and the B vitamins?), zinc & copper (same reasons).     I had a somewhat similar experience. Joey had a seizure which I correlate to taking Simparica. He looked terrible so took him to the vet when the first seizure happened and he was late Stage 2. Put him on Royal Canin kidney kibble and Hills kidney wet food and 4 years later he has only had 1 more seizure and his kidney values have remained constant. I will believe your homemade version is most likely better if you have the correct proportions. All the best to your Bs! Joey will be 15 in November.

    For those who have asked if I am keeping a puppy, the final answer is no. The reason, you might ask?…. In 2000 I placed a puppy bitch with a great home.. we showed her to her Dual Championship and Ann (Mom) showed/trained her to her Obedience and Rally titles.. it is a home to die for.... A week and 1/2 ago, we lost Crystal to unexpected kidney failure. Mom, Ann made the hard decision that life was not good for her and let her go over the Rainbow Bridge. Ann still has Kobey that we co-own and he has been really missing his older house sister, so I offered Ann my pick puppy. She has decided to accept and take her home. I could not be more pleased.... as Ann and her family are my family and the best of friends. As you all know, I have two bitches that get along like bread and butter or as another friend put it, Peas and Carrots! While I was set to keep a puppy, I did worry that 3 is a crowd and I do not and do not want to have "packs"... we all live together... as a family... so my fear in keeping a puppy was that I would break up the bond between C-Me and Franie... now that problem doesn't exist. We will visit with or Ann will come up her every weekend.. and hopefully they will all continue to bond and be friends and the boy dog, Kobey too, but I don't have much fear about the boy dog... (not always the case with Mom's and bitches when they are not in the same house).... So all the homes have been decided... the exact placement of the pups will be decided tomorrow after we grade the litter, but I am pretty sure who is going where.... will soon announce on the my website who is going where!
