$2500 [cdn] Basenji?

I was doing a search for Basenjis in Ontario and came across this ad in kijiji. I couldn't help but notice the price tag of $2500 and was wondering if it was for the whole litter? I did a search and found the info about the dogs at Ahmahr Nahr and was thoroughly impressed, but then I went to the africanadian basenJIES site and something didn't feel right…
BTW - I don't mean to offend anyone but I will put this out there. Quite frankly, if I was looking to buy a dog for $2500, I would like to see a link back to the original kennel as well as info about health testing. IMO

If the parents were as awesome as the seller lets on, then why are they advertising on the web and offering to "ship anywhere in the world?" I would have thought such a prestigious kennel would have their pups reserved for years to come.
Or am I just smoking something?

Before you are totally impressed, may I remind you…don't believe everything you read ;) And no, I can't imagine why anyone would pay that much for a puppy...

There was some discussion on another list about this kennel and some mentioned that some of the information was written creatively….

I just spoke with Jennie from Ahmahr Nahr, and she said that the pricing for the pups is around the $2500 range and depending on whether it is a show quality or a pet, the price can be as little as $1600. One of the pups actually sold for $3000. She's on her way to visit with the co-owner [the aforementioned seller] in Deep River to do an assessment on the pups….

Holy Cow! I've just looked to see what 2500cdn is in UK Pounds. ?1500 !!!
That is crazy money!! Or are basenji's cheaper over here than in other parts of the world??
I have heard of a labrador selling for ?10,000, but he was a dual champion producing champion pups and was a very good investment for the (overseas) buyer. Still, if i had ?10k i wouldnt spend it on a dog :rolleyes:

I know and saw a very small tri female at Medfly Rescue in So CA when I was there to pick up Buddy that someone had paid out over $3000 for including flying it from the midwest to CA. The guy then decided he did not want the dog and gave it up to Karen at Medfly. She kept the dog for herself. It's a very small female at about 16-17 lbs.

but…but...but...if this person is so respected as to be a co-chair for our own national specialty here in Canada, why would one falsify or be so creative to boost their kennel name? And how can someone actually get away with it? Is there no governing body to restrict or monitor such claims?

I think average here {US} is around $900 {at least it was 2 yrs ago,LOL} –- which I think is about 550 UK?

There is no governing body. Advertising is just that…advertising. I could tell you all here that I am tall, thin, and beautiful...I could tell you that I won the mother of the year award for 2009, I could tell you that my business brings in more money than I can spend, I could tell you that all of my basenjis (and kids) are perfectly behaved...but none of it is true...and only those that knew where to look for the truth could find it.

I believe those people are in Modesto that got that puppy… and paid that much. Then asked a couple of California breeders to evaluate it for show.... and was told the truth about the dog's conformation.....and about the breeder they purchased from

I do not think this person has been in the breed very long. I think this is her first litter. She did not put any of those titles or accomplishments on those dogs and may not even realize what she wrote is incorrect.
Some things that stood out to me is that she says Siete is a rare basenji obedience champion. This is incorrect he has an AKC CD title in obedience, this is not a champion title. An AKC obedience champion gets the title OTCH and as far as I know there are no basenjis to have earned one. The rarest basenji obedience title is the UDX. She also said Jake is the only basenji to every earn a Grand Champion and an AKC DC title. That is not quite true. He is so far the only basenji to earn a CANADIAN Grand Champion and AKC DC title but I know at least one dog that has an Australian Grand Champion and AKC DC.
These prices are severely out of line with what most responsible breeders with very nice accomplished dogs ask for. Most fall somewhere between $700-$1000 and do not differentiate their pricing between pet and show because their price is based on quality of care such as health testing, socialization, etc.

I believe in that ad one of the claims is that the dam of the litter was "reserve" at Crufts? To us in the USA, that would mean, reserve to the winners Bitch, or second. However, what it really meant is that the bitch was 4th place in the open bitch class as they list that as Reserve. So while it was not "really" false advertising, it was misleading, IMO

Ahh, thank you for putting my mind to rest. I'm a dolt when it comes to all these titles and truly rely on Clarisse and our breeder Arlene to clue me in. I'm just the photographer at these shows and currently on the hunt to find Kairoe a female companion.
I was wondering about the pricing as well, and noticed that most breeders in Canada and abroad sold their dogs between the $700 - $900 price point. I had yet to see a dog over $1000 until I came across this ad.

Have you talked with Arlene about what breeders might have puppies available this year? Also, if you are really happy with Kairoe, you may want to ask what her plans are for her next litter.
If you have already found a breeder you know and trust, there is no reason to start at square one when looking to add to your home. Start with that breeder and use them as a resource. It is part of that "lifetime support" that comes with a responsibly bred dog.

Clarisse and I, are looking to add a female companion for Kairoe and happenstanced on this ad. It's obvious to us that some breeders are there to capitalize on their business and would go as far as to perhaps mislead perspective buyers or even worse, to be misinformed themselves about their own dog's history. I learnt this earlier through conversation with the main kennel as she was quick to apologize for not knowing too much about this litter.
lvoss, you're correct, this is the new co-owner's first litter and the main owner of the kennel is going along with it, pricing and all. We do live in a capitalist society and we've concluded that it has punctured our naive lil Basenji world.

On a crappy note…I hope this will not affect any future showings for our own B...one would never know who could be lurking amongst the pixels.
