On searching "yeast infections in dogs" that organic plain yogurt and apple cider vinegar really helped a number of dogs get rid of the problem. They were using 2 tbls of yogurt and 1 tbls of the apple cider vinegar. Then rinsing the infected area with 50/50 vinegar and distilled water. Also if any foods have potato to get them off since potatoes are sugar. Also don't use nonfat or low fat as they use modified food starch as a thickener which is like sugar. The yeast love and grow because of the sugar.

  • I took Buddy to the vet and it did end up being a yeast infection. He's on antibiotic for 1 month and got some antihistamine to calm it down. He responded rather quickly and slept really well. He's hardy licked the area since getting home last night from the visit. Also some antibacterial shampoo which I used on him last night (just shampooing that lower body area). I asked her why the antibiotic is prescribed for a month, seems a long time. She said so the skin can completely heal without a chance of it starting up again during healing. So I have him taking a strong probiotic and goat milk yogurt in between meals to replace the good bacteria. She did not mention giving any probiotic or yogurt so I don't know if she's knowledgeable about that.
Also just a note here that Buddy's behavior was a bit odd too in that he seemed a little disoriented or afraid yesterday at the height of the infection. He was fine this morning. Thanks to Pat for mentioning that it might be a yeast infection as I was not even considering it. I am aware of people getting it but did not think about a dog getting it.

  • Glad to hear that Buddy is better!!! It is pretty common… have no idea why they get it. And it is one of the hardest things to clear up, so I can understand the 1 month of antibiotics.... It is always one of the first things that I consider with a belly rash or excessive licking...

My last Basenji Nika had it as well but I did not even think about that and the vet we went to did not either. It cleared up on changing the diet and going on the thyroid med. Thanks Pat!

  • You can put tea tree oil on a dog - I have put it on Shaye's tail when she was going through a phase where she thought it was great fun to pull hair out of it. It stopped her, and although I haven't put any tea tree oil on it, she never went back to it. It's also a good healer, and works great on things like chair legs, etc. that puppies of all ages like to chew on.

Not sure that tea tree oil would be good for yeast infection, but it is a great product to use for a number of different things

I don't know either. I don't think I'd want to cover a large area like the stomach with tea tree oil.

  • thanks for the input from all. i am treating him with vet's + best for the hot spots. they and he seem to be getting better. he's working on terrorizing his 3rd ll bean bed as we speak. today's his 3rd birthday so he can do whatever he wants!!!

@serenjane My Kembe had the freckles on her neck - more pronounced in summer months w/ the sun and also as she aged. I use to call her my little 🦒 giraffe. 😂

Never heard anything bad about raw eggs in the diet for Basenjis. However, my older male pukes even at the mention of eggs:(. My younger girl LOVES them, too much. (My loved but chubby one:))

Macpack, that is exactly what I will be doing from here on out, even though I got a new fancy trash can. Who knows, he might not have gotten so sick from trash digging, but I am not willing to take another chance.. Yes helpless is definitely how you feel.. but he is all well, still on antibotic and bland foods, but I am slowly introducing his normal diet, and I bought some probiotics and digestive enzymzes for him to take as well..any thing for a healthy gut..lol

I'm so sorry to hear about Meeka's situation. This is the first time I've read the thread all the way through and I have to say I'm just sitting here in tears. I can't imagine what you must be going through. But please know we all care about you and are sending good vibes your way. Our babies are so precious. This is just so heartbreaking.

I did buy a grinder-kind of in between a commercial and home use one. It will grind bones. When Zina was on the basic raw, she was on chicken and bone. But there were no organs in it. She was on it for about a month-supposedly to rid her body of toxins. Like I said she did fine at first, but when I started on the mixtures, that's when it went to pot. I wonder if I start her on one thing with organs and bones, maybe beef? if she would still have a reaction. What do you guys think about this. If she is allergic to chicken, and I'm still unsure about this (I wonder if she's sensitive to it), is she also allergic to other fowl?? The think I worry about is that if I do put her on one type of meat, will she get all her nutritional value? Freezer space isn't a problem, I can always pick up a second hand one fairly cheap, but I do have a 27' one and two small house freezers. Also, don't forget, this is a boxer. I haven't heard of a case of Fanconi in a boxer myself. If you are on a higher protein diet, your creatinine levels tend to be higher as well. I believe, this is why when you are on the Atkins diet, you still have to watch your intake. And Zina will not live another 5 years, most likely. What I have to do is make her life comfortable now. If she's happy for 3 more years and then I have to put her down, so be it. At least she was happy in the time she spent on this side of the Rainbow Bridge. It's better than the miserable first 7 months she spent. And this was not a breeder problem. The pet people who had her did not listen to the breeder, caused the issue to explode, literally, and the replacement puppy died at 2 1/2 of issues as well. I can get the meat fairly cheap, as I do have the grinder and the butchers will sell cheaper if they don't have to do anything to the meat. I also have the space, if this does work, to grow some of my own food for them. If I have to go to pork, because she's allergic to chicken, then in 6 months, I can have enough food for a long time. But I want to make sure of what I am doing first. She deserves to be happy.
