Love my Basenji's

    Hi, I have two Basenji's, my girl is now 10 years old and her name is Mandi, I adopted her from one of the Basenji rescue's around 6 years ago. My other Basenji is a "boy", his name is Rickie and is now 3 years old. I also adopted him. He was a pistol at first, always wanting to attack and growl, but with love and consistent assurance he has come around. I have a concern for Rickie, about 8 months ago he started loosing his hair, around the neck, along the sides of his body, his stomach and at the back of his flanks. He does not itch. I have him on a "no grain" dry food with organic ground beef (cooked). I also have him on Calif. Naturals, which is a supplement with the "good oils" and stuff and also a supplement called Solid Gold Seameal, both of which were recommended by the rescue. Nothing has helped! I had him tested this week for Hypothroidism by asking the Vet to take a T4 test called the FT4 by equilibrium dialysis. This came out NORMAL! Rickie is still a little grouchy and gets cold easily. One more thing, the skin under the hair is now very dark. Does anyone know what this could be or what caused it? Better yet, what shall I do now?:confused::confused:

    First, he needs a full thyroid panel, not just T4. The T4 can be normal but other parts of the panel can be abnormal and require medication. And…send results to Dr. Jean Dodds, she is an expert and will interpret the results and help you understand what the numbers mean...free!

    It could be something else, but with the combo of grouchiness and hair loss, thyroid is the place to start looking for an answer.

    I agree, full thyoid test is needed to know what the thyriod is…. and if it really is normal, I would suggest a specialtist in dermotology

    Welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear about Rickies problem, can't offer any advice but hope you get him sorted soon.

You should be able to find a clicker at most pet stores, but in absence of one it's easy to use a marker word or a click from your tongue. The advantage of a physical clicker is that there is not intonation as there may be with the voice, so the sound is neutral, the disadvantage is that you need to have it in your hand, which isn't always convenient.

    @mauigirl: Okay I actually went and found the e-mail I sent in to order the collar. The collars are from Northwind Catalog. Their medium collar is adjustable from 10" to 16" On the first collar I ordered I requested that it be 3" smaller than the medium size (Zip, girl), and the second I ordered I asked it to be 2" smaller (Riley, boy, bigger). In hindsight the medium as is would have been fine. On both of our dogs the collars are adjusted to just about as big as they can go so 13" on Zip and 14" on Riley (his is snugger going over his head but still loose around his neck). And the allowance looks to be 3" (that extra loop in a martingale that make it instantaneously adjustable) Sorry that took me so long, I ended up staying at work til 1am that night! Thank you very, very much !! It's past midnight now so I'll check it in the morning. Greetz UPDATE : Yes, they are the right size !:D

    Giza swam in the Atlantic once when we were out walkin' at low tide and the tile came in. The Atlantic in Canada is pretty cold!

    Andrea - I want to thank you for recommending the obedience website. We have all begun a program of dog training - fun for the kids especially. We have her (and the Jack Russell mix) sitting before they are allowed out, and they must "stay!" sitting even when the door opens until they are given a command to "go!" Even if the cat is just outside the door taunting them with his wicked yellow eyes to chase him - they must sit and stay until told to go. And now, after a month of constant training from all of us - they do it. In fact, both now sit at the door before it even opens anticipating the command. We also have hand gestures for the verbal commands - probably not the conventional ones, but they work for us and the pooches. We've started working on "come" now - Kandy definately doesn't like it, but she is beginning to obey "come-sit" for her treats. No treat without obeying. She's smart and quick to learn, and so is Sammy, so we're having a good time with them. Well, we did until Sammy went into heat and began making us all nutty with her constant whining and alternate aggressive behavior (she and Kandy had some real loud and nasty tussles) I had little time for the internet, for all the extra work it caused and the lack of sleep! But she's nearly done with that, and both are returning to whatever poses for normal and are getting along again. We're so happy with the two of them, and Kandy is so unique and special. What a treasure - wierd noises that she makes and all! MamaofMany
