Welcome to the Pack…I am sorry I didn't get to say hello sooner. I have been working all my extra time the last couple weeks on rescue work. I just wanted to say hello and welcome. Have you considered a rescue B. You are in an are of the country where their are quite a few in need. If you are interested you can check out the BRAT website at: http://basenjirescue.org
again welcome…. and if you get a chance please post some pics of your BFs mix... we can't get enough of them
Wow, thank you so much for making me feel accepted. Yes, I have filled out a BRAT application so I'm awaiting my Basenji to find me. As soon as I can figure out how to get a photo on here of him, I will post it ASAP!
I can assure you that Robyn's dogs are wonderful! We drove to Atlanta and back (in one day) to get our BRAT girl Nicky when she coordinated our adoption. It's a long day, but well worth it to get a great dog from a wonderful breeder. And gas is just a little over $2 a gallon!
Good luck to you, the right dog will find it's way to you.
Anne
Well thank you, I'm glad you have some positive feedback. Not that I was expecting some negative, but I will see what I can figure out. I did apply to BRAT the other day, So I'm hoping that a little lady comes my way soon! I w ill keep you all updated.
Im still trying to get a picture of my boyfriends dog up here, but I can't get email access at my work to post one!
How I wish I was closer to MI or could get one shipped to me! That would be a dream, I would love to have one and give it a great home. But, alas I do live all the way in FL. I do hope that they all find great homes. And goodluck to BRAT and everyone trying to take in as many as they can and getting them the help and love they need.
Brat does work off the applications, sometimes the dogs they have aren't posted on the BRAT list, just moved to the right home.
So, maybe you can go to the library to use their computer to fill out a BRAT ap? That is, if you can't find the dog you want from a responsible breeder.
Just a thought.
Oh wow really? thats not a bad idea, thank you so much. I will definately try to fill out an application as well and try my luck with BRAT. I would not mind at all getting a rescue dog, not in the least. I'm all about supporting rescue groups and humane societies. Thank you!
My folks are in St. Pete! They have what we think might be a b mix, but my parents just insist that she is a black and white curly tailed dog. Just out of curiosity- the lovelyships name caught me- are you a sailor?
Hope you find the perfect b for you!
Haha, well she sounds like she could be one! My boyfriends dog (Flea) was of unknown breed until I told him about Basenjis and sure enough he is a mix! Nope, haah Not a sailor I can barely swim actually. It was out of a song that I really used to like a long time ago and the name has stuck with me. Plus, I used to live outside of Boston and would go in and watch the sailboats in the bay and did think it was lovely;) .
I know this isn't near you at all, but if you were up for a road trip… looks like basenjis of all ages, even pups, need homes.

Wow, gosh do I wish I could get up to MI for this. But, as well know money is tight for everyone and I just sadly couldn't afford to go up there.:( If there was a way for them to even transport half way, which is not possible they're a shelter, I would jump on a chance in a heartbeat! Thank you for your help though it is imensely appreciated.
Welcome welcome. I love your adoptive spirit!
yodels from Switzerland.
Lauren & Lycia
Thank you again and hello Switzerland, wow you're quite far from me! Haha, well I do love animals very much and would love to give one a good home. I'm holding out for the one that captures my heart. :p
I did respond to you, Jen, though I may be more than 6 hours from you.
I did get your email thanks! Yes, you are alittle far from but hey If it's the dog that I want I will go the distance! Plus, my boyfriend and I have been postponing a trip to Atlanta since September and this wouldn't be too bad of an opportunity to go! Keep me updated on your pups and I am trying to figure out a money situation , ( you know how the economy is righ now haha;) ) and see if we can figure something out for the beginning of January. I do appreciate your prompt response!
Welcome to the forum – lots and lots of good information here and it's all archived so you can read through old but interesting threads. Feel free to ask whatever.
Thank you so much for making me feel welcome!
We meet up every Sunday around 11 at West Park in Hillsborough County (Tampa). I will be out of town this Sunday, taking the fur-kids to Flagler beach for a couple of days, but we have rarely missed a Sunday in the last 6 years! Some days we only have 4 or 6 basenjis, some Sundays up to 11 or 12. just let me know when you might come, I'll be sure and be there. Charlie's mom is friends with a very nice woman named Bambi who has 2 basenjis, Seff and Eshe, I think they meet up at the park occasionally so you may know them too.
Looking forward to meeting you and your pup.Anne
Oh wow, that's quite a long time! Have fun on your trip to Flagler I'm sure your pups will thoroughly enjoy it. I will let you know for sure when I'm going to come, I think it would be a great thing for me and would let me be more exposed to some Basenji's and their owners. I believe I do know the dogs, I haven't spoken with their owner yet but I do see them on occasion. I did just find a female Basenji Mix at a shelter, I'm hoping that the foster parents call me back. I'm crossing my fingers!
There is a breeder in Gainsville who does a lot of rescue, I know 2 basenjis from there. Also another breeder, Gale Whitehurst, in south Georgia, who has nice dogs. My friend Ginny got her boy Jack from Gale at about 15 months old, and he is a great dog. (his rump grew taller than his shoulders so he was not going to be in her breeding program and she wanted him to have a good home for about the price of the neuter) She drove down and met us in Gainsville to deliver him half-way. There are a lot of options out there within driving distance.
Anne
Oh wow , thank you so much! I have been looking everywhere for a breeder even within 6 hours of me! I haven't had too much luck I did find a few, but they're hard to get ahold of. You've been a big help Anne and thank you again, really. If there is anyway that I could get some of their info from you, if you have access to it and have the time to help. I would be forever grateful.
Hi Jen, I am in Tampa and know a basenji mix named Charlie who lives in St. Pete. He is a tri, tall and very fast, wonder if it is the same one I know. Can't remember his owner's name, she has a couple of chihuahuas too. We have a group that meets t a dog park in Tampa most every Sunday, we had 11 basenjis there last weekend. You are welcome to join us any time, you can see an assortment of basenjis from age 13 to less than a year. Welcome!
Anne in Tampa
Hello Anne, yes that is the same Charlie! She is an older woman with an English accent and she said that Charlie is mixed with a Collie or shepard of some sort. Him along with the rest of her pack, is such a doll and get's along great with my boyfriends dog. Wow, I would love to come sometime and bring along our little mutt to join in the fun! I will keep my eyes and ears open for another meetin of yours and do if you have the chance let me know in advance as well.
Aw well thank you everyone for making me feel so welcome! Yes, as soon as I get the chance to I will surely post a picture of his dog! He has the "worry brow" and the curled tail, the speed, the agility, the brain, speaking and characteristics! But, with shepard markings! He's a great dog as well.
Thank you all again I will keep on searching!:)
Have you filled out a BRAT application? You should go ahead and do that just in case you see one that would suit you… that way you would know if you would be an acceptable (To BRAT) as a potential home.
Good luck in your search
No, that I have not. I am without a computer at the moment, sadly mine bit the dust. So, I do only use the one that I have available at work which is for "
"work only" but I will find enough time to fill it out. I have looked it over and should hopefully be completing one soon!
Hey there, nice to meet you. I am a WV girl but my birthplace was sunny FL! Are you or have you been a dog owner before? Bella is my first pup and let me tell you… she tries to own me, but I do love her dearly!:D Have you done much research on the breed? They are a fascinating canine with their own little (and big) quirks. Beautiful animals, elegant and proud... with a mind of their own! The fact that you are active is great because the Basenji is quite active as well. I wish the best of luck to you in finding that special friend... Do you know if you want to start with a puppy or an adult? Keep us posted with any updates, also... if you have any questions.;)
Hello and thank you for your input! I have a cat named Bella actually I am not currently a dog owner no, I am awaiting my Basenji girl! I have been a dog owner before but she passed a few years ago and I pretty much take care of my boyfriends dog anyway. Oh yes, I have done hours upon days upon months of research. They do sound like the perfect dog for me and I have spoken with a few Basenji owners that go to my dog park when I get a chance to see them. A bonus is that my boyfriends dog is a Basenji Mix so I get to see a lot of their characteristics in him. He plays with this male named Charlie and they are pretty much identical in everyway minus their looks!
Well I do prefer a puppy so it can be raised with my cat, his cat and the dog. But, I don't mind a 2yr old. They need love and an open heart as well! I will definately keep you updated and I will continue to search!
Are you looking for an adult? Or a puppy? If an adult, have you tried BRAT? (www.basenjirescue.org) or if a puppy, you can find find breeders at http://www.basenji.org/PUBLIC/BreederDirectory.htm
If a puppy be sure to go to a responsible breeder that health tests their Basenjis. You can read about the health concerns of our breed at www.basenjihealth.org or at www.basenji.org
If you decide on rescue, please consider DNA testing for Fanconi (you can also read about Fanconi and DNA testing on both the parent club site and the parent club health endowment site)
Thank You for the info! Yes, I do look at BRAT a few times a week to check for any Basenji's in Florida. I am looing for one that is 2yrs old at the most but I prefer younger. I will definately check that breeder directory for some in my area. I also look on Craigslist and petfinder! I'm all over the place trying to find one, haha. I won't lose hope though.
Again, thank you for your help!
Hello,
Man these dogs are hard to find! I have been searching for months upon months where I live ( St Pete, FL) and I have yet been able to find one. So, I figured I would post on here to see if anyone has one available.
I am looking for a little black and white female, even a brindle bundle of energy to keep my boyfriends Basenji/Shepard Mix company, as well as myself of course ;). She can be anywhere from a young pup to around 2yrs, I know it's harder to place older dogs and I have no problem opening my heart up to a teenager. Please, if you know anyone or if you yourself has a female that needs a loving home where she would be pampered and brought to the dog park 5x's a week! Contact me with any questions or if you need to find one a home.
Thank You!
Hello All,
I am new here, well as of last night I am very new! I unfortunately don't have any Basenji's to call my own, yet. Hence the reason I joined this forum, to find one to join me in my life. I'm a 25yr old female, I currently live in St Pete, FL and am extremely active and am searching for a female Basenji to enjoy romps in the park with. Have a good Monday everybody and I hope to be able to share future stories and pictures of my Basenji!
