I have a 10 month old full blooded red Basenji (African bark-less dog, they yodel), he is up-to -date on his shots, heartworm free. He needs a forever home with a great family that can devote time to him. He is house trained and good with kids, he is still a puppy and wants to play all the time. Basenji's are a very rare breed, they are barkless dogs and very smart and loyal dogs. If you would like to adopt him and offer him forever home please feel free to contact me, I am asking for an adoption fee.

  • I really have mixed feelings about all these craiglist ads being posted to the forums. The forums has specific policies about offering dogs for sale or adoption and posting these listings as "rescues" seems to bypass those rules and generate interest in these dogs.

I realize that they need homes but I am not sure that it is correct to consider these dogs rescues and posting their craigslist ads bypasses the the forum rules for advertising dogs available.

  • This dog is not a rescue. Would you please ask the dog's owner to fill out the following information and post it in the section Basenjis For Sale or Wanted

You must title your post with your City and State
Example For Sale: Basenji boy(s) For Sale in Jersey City, NJ/NY/PA

    Your name:
    Your city, state:
    Your phone numbers/email:

    Age of Basenji(s):
Current weight of Basenji(s) for sale:
    Weight of Basenji(s) parents:

  • I have some of the same feelings especially when the ads are for young dogs which will easily find homes. Dogs that are older don't get new homes as easily. I see that the senior b female with an attitude still hasn't found a home, she is listed in the petfinder classifieds now. I definetly don't think there should be postings when people are selling puppies.
A lot of people try to bypass the craigslist policy against selling dogs and getting flagged by stating that they're rehoming a dog and asking a small fee which isn't available unless you contact the seller.
Does anyone know how many dogs BRAT or the other rescues acquire through craigslist? I know the Wisconsin Basenji group acquired Pearl and Ruby through a craigslist ad.

  • I am the guilty party posting these listings from Craig's List. If you want me to stop, I will…

However, the reason that I post these ads (and pictures) is because I know that many breeders are on this forum. Imagine as you enjoy your first cup of coffee and open up this forum one morning, you see this listing. You think to yourself, "Hey, I sold little Sparky to a home in Clarksville TN"... and holy moly, there he is! That would give you, as a responsible breeder, a chance to get this boy back, especially if it was in your contract.

The other scenario that haunts me is one where someone finds a runaway basenji, and they try to keep it. After a couple of weeks/months/year... they decide to sell it on Craig's List. I remember the lost Texas red boy who is still missing.

If the moderators (or general consensus) is to stop doing this, I can. It does take a couple of minutes per posting, because I want to make sure the picture is there for those that are looking for lost souls.

  • Frankly, I don't get what the hullabaloo is all about. I think you are doing a good thing, spending your time trying to help out some dogs that are not in good situations. I think that those who don't wish to read the posts can simply not read them. You are not benefiting anyone but the dogs, so I can't see any harm in that. I don't think people on here are using the forum to sell puppies, just trying to help (rescue) dogs that need new homes.

Thank you for the kind words. I love our dogs, and while I'm at capacity for the number of dogs I can have, there may be other people on here who can open their hearts to one more.

I'm not sure if I re-posted this ad, but this posting is a perfect example of why I re-post them here.

Male 2 year old full-blooded red & white Basenji. Loves to sleep in bed with you and snuggle up on the couch with you. Doesn't shed (much) and is a really beautiful dog. Loves to ride in the car with you. Doesn't bark at all, although he does make sounds, especially when yawning or when left alone. He gets along great with other dogs and even seems to want to play with them. He knows the sit command and will obey - when he wants to. Walks great on a leash. Doesn't seem aggressive, although he does slightly growl if you try to take a toy away.

We were given this dog by his former owner who said he was house broken and crate trained. We quickly found out that he isn't completely house broke and he HATES being in a crate. In fact, he darn nearly tore up the wire crate we had him in, bending the wires and chewing up the plastic tray in the bottom (we were told he makes some noise when he first goes in it but then settles down). **We tried to find the owner's post here on CL, but it's nowhere to be found, or we'd return him to them (if you're reading this and want him back, please feel free to email us about him).
    **
We are in the process of moving into a new house and just won't take the chance that he'll tear something up there too.

We believe he needs someone who will take him everywhere they go or will let him have the run of the house (we can't do either). If you have the time and patience to spend with him and would be interested in giving him a really good home, please let us know, as we really DO care about this dog and don't want to just dump him someplace.

  • Patty, I think you're completely sincere and your heart is in the right place for posting these Craigslist ads. That said, I also see the legitimacy of others' concerns that reposting ads for Basenji pups that seem to be for sale does skirt the rules of the forum. Ads that shouldn't be on Craigslist in the first place probably shouldn't be reposted here, in my opinion (i.e., "rehoming" 8-week old pups, asking for a large enough sum of money where the money obviously matters more than the quality of the dog's future home).

In other instances, where the rehoming fee is low enough that the owner is more likely to surrender their dog to rescue, I can see the rationale for reposting here in order to get the attention of rescuers or to find other Basenji-savvy individuals that could step in to rescue the dogs. But after the rehoming fee climbs to a certain amount, it seems unlikely that BRAT can do anything about the situation since they will not buy dogs, nor does it seem likely that the ad writer will be willing to give their dog away for free, even to rescue.

When I've done similar searches, I have sometimes e-mailed the Craigslist ad writer directly to suggest that they contact their breeder and/or make the move themselves to give their dog to rescue. Sometimes that may be more effective than reposting here, especially if one phrases their suggestions in a gentle way.

Or perhaps we could return to collecting these types of postings under one topic, "Basenjis on Craigslist," as I think it used to be?

  • I think the basenji on craigslist is great idea.

I received this from Lori who is the BRAT Mix Coordinator: Yachtz is a sad and difficult case due to his age. He is 12 years old, in excellent health, up to date on vaccinations and sadly been in a Kennel for over 4 months now. His owner has fallen on very hard luck finding herself homeless after hospitalization and is devastated that her longtime companion now has no one to provide for him and keep him safe as he lives out his life. The local ASPC graciously stepped up and paid part of the kennel fees but that was a while ago and now there is again a sizeable bill of over $1000. The kennel owners understand though that they will never be able to recover these fees and have been absolutely great in this situation, they do not want to see Yacthz euthanized, they say he is still a vibrant and healthy mix. He is bigger, about 50 pounds but has the Basenji yodel and coloring. They are willing to work with any group who can get him into a home, be it foster care or a forever home. Understandably though, he needs to be out of the kennels! According to his longtime owner,…. Yachtz sounds aggressive around bicycle riders, skaters of both skate board and any type of roller skates. He is also sensitive to motorcycles. He was like this when we adopted him in 2003 and have no idea what may have happened to him in his early years. Yachtz also can be aggressive at meal or snack time if another dog is near his food. He will protect his food… He does not have a bite history but may do better living out his senior years as an only dog or with an owner experienced enough to deal with these characteristics effectively. Yachtz’s owner is still homeless and has been told once that Yachtz had already been euthanized, please help us to help his owner rest easy in this difficult time by assuring that Yachtz will have the opportunity to have a wonderful forever family to live out the rest of his natural life. If you have a warm spot in your heart and home that Yachtz might occupy for the rest of his life please contact Ray Eckart, BRAT Coordinator. Ray is helping the owner and kennel owner to find a safe resolution for this sweet pup. Please Contact; Ray Eckart rayeck1052@att.net Jennifer

I can't get my mind around this advert but of course the background circumstances might be not quite as the advert sounds. I have to hope not as it's terrible to think that the person wants to home a 12 year old Basenji who is not even hers just because she doesn't (yet) get allong with a child.
