I'm glad to know I'm not the only suspicious person. Is this a back yard breeder perhaps, or just a scam? I wonder…
When I adopted Lola, my sister fostered her for a week, fell in love with the breed, and started searching for her own basenji rescue. She found the red/white one in MO that she now owns... but was suddenly enchanted by a similar ad from this person, where there was a girl or a boy available for $200. My sister ignored her plans to get Bacchus, and started a dialogue with Donna. She received adorable pictures of young red/white pups, and Cathy was interested in the young girl, "Baby".
I listened in the background as she called and talked to her, and while the lady was very nice, I felt like there was something shady going on. Cathy asked her about Fanconi, and at first she "didn't know nothing", but then as the conversation went longer, her daughter was in the background and when Donna asked her about it, the reply was something like, "Oh yeah, I read about it in a Pets Magazine. It's kind of like diabetes. The momma and daddy doesn't have it...."
I was extremely skeptical, but my sister committed to flying from Milwaukee to Dallas, renting a car, picking up "Baby", and flying back home the same day. Donna told her that she wanted a deposit of $100 to make sure that my sister was serious, and Cathy agreed.
While she was supposed to make flight arrangements and get back to this family with her flight times, Cathy did some soul searching, and kept thinking about the older stray in Missouri that needed a home. In the end, she decided to drop her plans to adopt Baby and to drive to Missouri to meet Mr. Bacchus....
And Bacchus lives happily ever after with his Becca.
