Health insurance?

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • just curious… does anybody actually buy health insurance for your dogs? which plan? is it worth it? i imagine there are tons of exclusions, so i just wonder if it would actually be very beneficial.
    thanks!

  • We did have insurance through VPI pet insurance. For a 4 years we used to pay around 250.00 per year. It covered little of regular visits . The insurance will beneficial if there is a expensive surgical procedure involved. ( they have guidelines about what is covered ).This yr they wanted to increase our premium and decrrase our benefits. We did not think it made sense anymore for us to keep it so we concelled it.

Please be careful about all the fine print and ask them tp give you the catalog that shows you what is covered in the plan that u interested in . This way you can calculate if it is wroth taking the policy. Good Luck

  • We have vpi for our two B's and have been very pleased with the plans. M

  • I plan on putting some money into a savings account monthly, about $75. All the fine print scares me, and I don't want the hassles if something I thought was covered is not.

@smharr4: I also have a Care Credit card (http://www.carecredit.com/) which will allow me to pay the bill at the vet immediately, then I can just transfer the money between bank accounts (which takes a few days) so the Care Credit card is payed off before any interest accrues. At least one of our local vets also has a 'promissory note' payment scheme where you pay half when you pick up your pet then spreads the rest out over 3-4 months, that can come in handy too sometimes. Thanks for the tip. I will ask my vet if he has any 'promissory note' scheme. That sounds good, and…yes it would come in handy!

The fanconi test needs to be ordered from the OFA website, https://secure.offa.org/cart.html Have you talked to Nilo's breeder about health testing. Without pedigree information his tests alone don't provide a very complete picture since disorders like PRA are late onset.

We use PetCare Insurance & considering how many times I've been to the Vet this year with one dog alone  I think it's SO worth it :) I also think that if (heavens forbid) your dog ever got into a serious injury that required surgery or long term care that would be insanely expensive. And most people would opt not to go through with it at the risk of losing their beloved dog. Like most insurance policies you're paying a premium for the potential possibilities that you'll need it one day…life insurance (I've been paying forever & every year I neve cash in LOL :D), medical insurance, homeowners insurance...etc.

@Quercus: Important update from the Basenji Club of America: The Basenji Health Endowment is pleased to announce the establishment of its own website and information portal for the Basenji Fancy. The BHE can be found at: http://www.BasenjiHealth.org or http://www.BasenjiHealthEndowment.org. To inagurate our new website, the Basenji Health Endowment is pleased to announce that it has directly funded Dr. Gary Johnson of the University of Missouri to develop a marker-based test for Fanconi Syndrome. You may read the complete press release at: http://www.BasenjiHealth.org/bhe042007.pdf And also there are links if you would like to donate to the Health Endowment… this is a very important break through for our breed and especially for breeders. For anyone that has had or knows of a Fanconi Affilicted Basenji.. knows what a terrible affilication this is.... and for us to finally start to get a handle on it is something we have been waiting for..... Please all remember strip test your Basenjis... at least once a month....
