Bad Problem

Basenji Training
  • Is the puppy frantic when crated or calm?

  • Be patient and follow the advice given about carrying him out of the crate after he has eaten. Watch carefully for 'I need to poo' movements (usually restlessness and turning round and round. Also watch him behind to see whther he is pushing out although not all do this.

Personally I think you're expecting a bit much in a short time - usually I find the mothers train their pups in the first instant but he might not have had that puppy learning. I see this was posted as a 'bad problem' but it's certainly not that - there could be far worse problems LOL!!!

Again I say be patient, he's only a baby! You'll most likely look back on this in a few weeks time and wonder why you were so concerned!

  • How much time does he spend in the crate, in a 24 hr period? If you said, I missed it…

  • Keep the routine of taking him outside periodically as you are doing and give him LOTS of praise as soon as he does his business outside. It just needs time, since he understood that the only way of relief was doing his job inside the crate. Keep consistency and you will see the positive results you are looking for.

@lisastewart: Trog chewed on my ankles and wrists for a good nine month despite giving him as much play as I could to wear him out, Cara is extremely mouthy. She liked to hold my arm or hand in her mouth as she went to sleep, sometimes creepily rubbing her tongue against me. She has always done play biting but she has the softest mouth ever. It is rare for her to ever put enough pressure to make a indention even in her wildest playing. I am okay with that. I had one dog before her, a Rottie, who wanted to hold you. I didn't let on lead, but did while just sitting with her. But I'd look out to see Larry leading her down the road, him holding the leash, her holding his hand in her mouth. I figured her leading him was okay.

@agilebasenji: FYI - tea tree oil is great, however it is toxic to cat, so if you have cats, you may want to rethink (or at least not put it on the cat) Good to know about the cats…thank you we do have 2.

@Shaye's: Not to be indelicate, but you can also watch the dog carefully for when he's starting to circle and, their little butts kind of pooch out when they are ready to poop. Watching for that was a godsend for us when we were training Shaye. Yup. Very good point here. I noticed this as well.

Oh, I was talking about dry hair. There is NOthing that can keep Medjai from wet hair. He will climb on my shoulders and lick my head for 15 minutes if I let him.

I have always feed morning and evening… if by chance you are free feeding that will add to your problem of trying to get her on a schedule.
