Abby Digs

Basenji Talk
  • Max always dug dug dug before laying down to sleep at night–or before laying down for a snooze during the day. He would also dig at the floor when he was stressed out at the vets. I always thought he might be doing it to calm himself down or burn off some nervous energy--kind of a stress reliever thing.

  • Actually there was another thread with this same topic..And we all concluded that there's a Basenji Summit in CHINA :D every night they MUST attend…hence the neurotic digging :D :D :D

  • I like the summit comment. Beeji will dig in his dog bed and will take a couple of swipes at the couch before curling up in the tightest little ball.

I figured he was burrowing and thought it might be the terrier in him, glad to know others do this too.

  • Dig and circle all 6 of them.;)

  • i always thought it was them making their bed….

  • My Abbey digs every night and before every nap. She also digs at the carpet if I'm at the computer or reading. It's become a game to get attention I think. Mommy sits down, I dig the carpet, Mommy jumps up. Mommy sits down, I dig the carpet, Mommy jumps up. I can almost see her laughing at Mommy on a String!

  • I figured she was digging a hole to lay in, it's nice to know it's not just Abby. She also tries to burry her bones and gets visibly upset if she can not find a spot to put it.

  • FYI, Caesar used to do the other digging you are talking about. laying on his side stretched out on the floor and digging on the carpet. he put a hole in our carpet all the way to the concrete and would never leave the spot alone after that. i put in hardwood floors to fix the problem and used my basenji as my excuse to get them< LOL

I typically will let him dig if he is making a bed on a blanket, but they can be descructive if you dont watch them.

Beta used to dig her bed in my bed and was able to tear a whole in the sheets. Almost like she was digging to China….so funny....

  • yes to the digging! Querk is the worst digger/spinner. Ivy is a flipper..she likes to flip the cushions around to make her nest just right on the couch!

I like the summit idea…that is perfect!

Ah ok cool thanks, I had something like that when Safi was smaller and it was the most successful for sure. She outgrew it quite quickly though

I can't listen to that, it would wake my girl up and well... I'm not into a "sing along" just now. ;) I will say that many canines howl and yodel and bay (at the moon, whenever a fire truck passes, etc.). I'm not certain that any one breed is distinctive enough to have a sound all their own, but many a proud owner would probably assert so.

We use ones from Rukka. Not sure if they’re available everywhere but they are they best ones we have tried (others always fell off, especially in deep snow). I think having two Velcro closures on each sock has been key. I also prefer the soft shell ones as our B seems to accept them more and they don’t twist as much as the ones with a hard sole. Here are the ones I am referring to: https://rukkapets.com/paw-wear/thermal-shoes-black

My undergraduate degree was in geophysics with a minor in applied math. I name all my Basenjis after Indian mathematicians. My current Basenjis are Madhava of Sangamagrama (Madhava for short) and Bramagupta (Bramagupta for short). They do respond to their "short" names.
