He is a cutie. Looks like he is getting lots of love and he will return it. Glad you have him.
Do your male basenjis squat to pee?
-
I'm reading a couple of basenji books, and one of them mentioned that male b's squat to pee instead of lifting their leg. Is this something that is done in the puppy stage? Or throughout a male b's life?
-
Yep. Mine does. I've never seen him lift a leg. He's 6 years old.
-
My boy does both. Give him a tree- he lifts his leg..Out on the lawn - he squats…then again he never does things like the other dogs! :p
-
Mine does both. And he's intact. In the morning when he hasn't got time to find the right tree, he pees 'like a girl'. After that he marks a couple of times, lifting a leg.

Otis does both, more squatting then lifting leg though. He just started lifting his leg and he is 13 months old.

+1 :D:D:D This is exactly the same at my house and Brando is also intact.
When I was bringing Brando to work with me last summer because he broke his leg, one of my co-workers laughed at him because he squatted. I told her, "hey, give him a break as I'm sure it hurts like h*ll to lift a leg and put extra weight on his broken leg."
Personally, because Brando also pees on his front leg sometimes when he lifts his leg, I'd rather he squat - because he won't walk until he does cleanup on himself. :D:rolleyes:

Yes…here too. Querk will only lift his leg if he is marking over another male's pee...or if he is around a bunch of other dogs, like at a show. When he was younger he would accidentally pee on his own leg too.
Hippo has just started to lift his leg at around 2 yrs old. He will do it to mark over where Querk pees, but usually he just squats.

Tillo also pees on his front legs sometimes when he lifts his leg but then decides it takes too long and puts it down again while peeing..
You can always see him thinking.. Damn.. I'm clumsy.. -
My male sometimes stretches out to pee on all fours.
Our girl lifts her leg to pee. sometime she backs up against a tree and lifts her leg.
have not got a picture of her doing that yet.
-
Ick, I'm glad Nemo squats. Maybe we should change the breed standard so the males are a little longer backed, so the lifted-leg pee angle is better.
-
Buddy just stands in the middle of the yard with his foot lifted about 1/2" off the ground or he'll just stand there. The bad thing is when does this he'll turn back and lap the pee. Don't know why he does it. It's like he's cleaning himself before he's done peeing. If he uses a tree or pole no problem. Weird!
-
Alex did "the stretch/squat" for all 15+ years of his life. Never saw him lift his leg once.
-
Nicky will lift his leg on vertical objects but he also does pee standing up if he can't find a vertical object he would like to pee on. My husband calls it horse peeing because it remind him of how male horses pee.

For some reason, that's just one more thing that Basenjis remind me of horses. Kananga likes to gallop sometimes and I always joke that he's trying to be a "mini-horse".

My last Basenji was a pain for lifting his leg pee, it took ages out on a walk as he felt obligated to mark everything. I love carboot sales and i had to be careful not to get to near to stalls or he was likely to lift his leg on them :o
Whilst in his own garden he didn't bother with marking and squatted like a girl.
He was a neutered male. -
Mine does both. Before I got Cody neutered, he mostly lifted his leg, but stretched/squatted sometimes. Now he only lifts his leg to mark. He mostly stretch/squats, and almost always pees on his front paws because he keeps walking. He doesn't stop to pee, he just slows down a little (He also keeps walking while he poops)

:D:D This thread is quite amusing, our big Dog used to poop as he walked along. You had to keep a watch otherwise you stood in it!

OMG, don't get me started on the walking and pooping. :D:rolleyes:

Mine does that and he'll twirl around in circles on a lawn and if it's night time it's "damn, where did that poop go"? using a flash light.
