Coat texture

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • I've noticed that Cody's fur has become kind of coarse lately. The last time I bathed him was a little over a month ago and I just wipe him down with a wet cloth when he needs it. Do B's coats change texture in the winter or could it be his diet?

  • Could be season, could be food….I can't answer that, but recently, I started AJ on salmon oil capsules: I cut a slit in the tip of the capsule and squeeze the oil out for him to lick. He loves it and his coat has gotten much softer. He still has the pricklies along his stripe, but they aren't as pokey as they used to be. I give him a 1,000mg capsule each day.

  • Ok, thanks! I will have to try that. This is our first winter together, so I wasn't sure if their coats changed during the season.

I haven't studied coat colour inheritance in dogs, but from what I know of it in horses, you can tell quite a lot by looking at sire and dam and grandparents. Sometimes you can rule certain colours in or out, and determine probabilities of the colours you will get in a mating. Someone who knows more about dog colour genetics will be of more help. If an animal is homozygous for a trait, or heterozygous can sometimes be determined by knowing the colour of the parents…..

Right now because Taste of The Wild High Prairie (Bison) is on the recall list, Kipawa is eating Acana kibble, NRG dehydrated food, blueberries, melons, broccoli ad other tasty, healthy things. The oil we use is Udo's 3-6-9, and I am very happy with his coat. Bless you for helping out one of these wonderful creatures.

Patty, I can't see why not. It shouldn't be given every day, but now and then. And it should NOT be replaced with their regular food. Eggs have lots of good protein, and it's also a good source for riboflavin, B12 and phosphorus, and even selenium. I've seen only a few dog food brands with riboflavin in it, and I believe it's an important deal for dogs, as well for us humans.

My boy seems to be able to hold it forever !!!!!! I am home most of the time but on the rare times I 'm out for a long period of time he has never had an accident. Even on Holidays when I have been gone for upto 12 hours. That is rare !!!!!

Wow, I'd not heard of these coat changes. My B has grown some longer hairs in the white around her neck and the red just on the edge of the white, and some of the hair along her neck has faded to a lighter color - no losing bunches or real drastic changes though. What other changes to their coats are normal?
