PetzLife Oral Spray

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Well, here's the follow-up on the dental spray I've tried on AJ.

As with good food, it only works if you can get it into the dog. AJ hates the spray and runs from me when I get the bottle out. I'm not sure whether it's the burst or it's the peppermint flavor, but he absolutely loathes the stuff.

I will say, though, that with the few times I've been able to get it onto his teeth, his breath has improved and his teeth are a little whiter. My verdict is this: I will give up torturing my dog with it, but if your dog tolerates it, it is effective.

    Cheers!

  • I have found the gel is easier to work with. I take a pea-sized amount on my index finger, and then wipe it on the roof of Kananga's mouth. It allows his tongue to coat his teeth.

He doesn't love it or hate it, but it's quick and easy.

  • +1.

I've heard a few people I know have trouble with the spray. I bought the gel originally and while the kids don't love it, they tolerate it just fine. I'll stick with the gel - I've used it successfully for almost a year now.

@Rebel - Full blood workup including full Thyroid panel (full panel no just what the normal vet workup that is not a full thyroid panel)... as they say make sure that he is in good health. Also what are you feeding him? How much total are you feeding a day? Also with reducing food, add veggies to his food to fill his belly... green beans are good to use... I use Cauliflower and Broccoli... Note also that low normal is typically too low for Basenjis.

To give you an idea of the contrast between Basenjis and Border Collies, my BC once spit out a pill, I said "Blackie" in a disapproving tone, and he picked it up from the floor and swallowed it!

@jenwilson: My basenji/whippet mix scratches alot too. I give her a children's benadryl (hidden in peanut butter) daily. It seems to help. She had an allergic reaction to something the Thursday before Christmas. We went to the vet on that Friday and got a steroid shot and pills. It rash cleared up overnight and hasn't returned. We still don't know what she is allergic too. The vet did suggest the benadryl and I would rather do that daily and hopefully not have to give her anymore steroids. Food allergy perhaps? We had that problem with one and it was anything with wheat flour in it. Little skin rashes or hot spots. I guess it could be any number of things.
