    Hello we just got our pup. He is 9 weeks old and was wondering what are the best ways to house train a Basenji pup. We just want to start out the right way with Sancho.

    It is nice to see you here looking for information.

    I would hope that your pup's breeder would have gien you all of this kind of information.
    My guess is that your puppy manual [and yes I am serious] did not include anything about house training.
    The biggest thing to remember when training them for the house is that they are a DOG, and a puppy at that…. which means that unless you havce no value for anything in your house, you need to crate train him.
    You may want to purchase the Basenji Owners Manual through the Evergreen Basenji Club to have something to refer to, in addition to your puppy manual.

    There is lots of information about house training and crate training… Did you get any information from the breeder? That is really who should have provided you with lots of info.... but if not... you have come to the right place.

    Hopefully your pups sire and dam have been DNA tested for Fanconi?

Lady, who arrived in the household just four days after Donner and long before we totally dog-proofed the garden, so walks were necessary, did her business as and when she needed to. But Himself no - to prolong the walk he'd hang on for (sometimes) miles ! When the first litter came along, we did totally fence the entire garden so as to keep the pack safe. It was only later, after several litters developed a penchant for fresh vegetables straight off the plant, Brussel Sprouts, sweet corn, cucumbers, raspberries etc, that we had to fence off the vegetable garden to protect it from the marauding hordes. The herb garden had to be isolated too, or we'd have even sweeter smelling puppies than normal.

    Kipawa does this as well, and also prefers to do it with dogs that have a longer coat. I've never had a problem yet, but I do watch carefully. If Kipawa starts going a little overboard, I redirect with a treat, or I will also tell him "time out". Both work for us.

    I have had that same situation with Ayo,only with him it's usually with large dogs. we only have one area at the park here, all together, small dogs and big dogs. When he goes in he always chooses one big dog , runs up to him and starts growling. Sometimes he stops very quickly, or the other dog growls back and it stops or it escalates , usually because the other dogs owner freaks out. He is fine around small dogs. And I am pretty sure that he is fine with most dogs, that if I leave them they will work it out, but I'm afraid to let it play out because bigger dogs can really hurt him, and also because usually the other owner freaks and intervenes making everything worse. Sooo, Ayo has started to get a bit of a rep.. The basenji rep!! I usually wait till only small dogs are in…
