Hyperparathyroidism

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Try homeopathic Ignatia for Rosy. 30c potency 3 X a day. I've found this very successful for grieving departures.

  • Interestingly, Jenny, inspired by the messages here, suddenly realised the problem with Rosie. She was angry, yes angry, with Jenny about the fact that Bing wasn't here because she had seen her take him away.

It might seem a little far-fetched but Jenny recalled that some years ago when our young Morgan mare was sent away for training for a few weeks, my Westfalian gelding, some years older than her and who had 'raised' her from a foal was behaving very oddly towards me. He would uncharacteristically glare at me with bloodshot eyes when I went up to him in the field and would then paw the ground (or should that be hoof the ground?). Suddenly I recognised that he was angry with me as he had watched me lead her to the horse box.

Then, as with Rosie now, the answer was to show a little understanding and compensate with extra attention and love. It worked brilliantly tonight and Jenny is delighted to have her little girl back again…

  • Very well done and I'm so pleased that all is now well.

Did she always have them or did they start after something/some time? Do antihistamines clear the problem?

@Rebel - Full blood workup including full Thyroid panel (full panel no just what the normal vet workup that is not a full thyroid panel)... as they say make sure that he is in good health. Also what are you feeding him? How much total are you feeding a day? Also with reducing food, add veggies to his food to fill his belly... green beans are good to use... I use Cauliflower and Broccoli... Note also that low normal is typically too low for Basenjis.

@serenjane My Kembe had the freckles on her neck - more pronounced in summer months w/ the sun and also as she aged. I use to call her my little 🦒 giraffe. 😂

Had you opened a new bag around the time this started? Sometimes they change ingredients or suppliers of ingredients, which is the way an allergen can sneak in....

@mryltis Read this comment from @morgansc within this post dated May 30, 2019, 7:49 AM. It answers your question. Ideally it is best to wait until age 24 months but no early than 18 months. https://basenjiforums.com/post/177284
