A Basenji is on my food!

  • Also, I mean this is kind of a bizarre way to think of it, but how much of the food is used by the body and how much just passes on through?

I find "Evo poo" (I actually call it that) to be very distinctive because it's so itty bitty!

If most of the "food" comes out the other end because it has a lot of cheap filler, aka "fluff" with zilch nutritional value, it's kind of a waste of money, isn't it? I mean it doesn't even get absorbed.
And you're picking up more poo…..

That's correct. The better the food the less you need to feed the less to pick up.

  • Well, that's not quite how the production of excrement works. But you can tell by the firmness and smell if what you are feeding your dog is good. If it's firm, and does not stink to high heavens and doesn't activate your gag reflexes then nutrients are getting absorbed. However, if it's very loose, soft, and really stinks then its bad.
This same rule applys to humans as well. So keep an eye on your poo! ;) The amount of poo has nothing to do with it, actually in some cases more is better (like fibers etc doing it's job).

  • Ive seen the Doggie Shampoo at Walmart with a basenji on it! I was SO Impressed!!

@creambasenji Please start a new topic/thread in Member Introductions when you upload an image of your "cream" basenji. That way, more people will see it. (thanks!)

I am pretty sure you can't just look at a mix and declare what it is. Scientific studies have debunked that over and over. Best to do a DNA test, in my opinion. I have a mix who was advertised as a Basenji Mix, and her DNA results confirmed it. If you just looked at her and made a judgement, it would be mixed: her color was all askew, her tail was half-curled, she was smaller and featured more slender face and feet than a pure-bred B. But, apparently, the 1/4 Min Pin (the ONLY other DNA in her sample) contributed some significant traits. Behavior and personality wise, Basenji rules the day. Again, I recommend a DNA test, and they improve by the day. What is this other B identity thing that is mentioned in this thread? Is it also a DNA test, or something else? Oh, and hey, your baby is way cute!

You had me confused and then I realized you meant the write up on the other rescue (Okapi)… I like less white also. So I had to go look... wow, coloring reminds me of minpins. :) Cute dog though.

@Buddys: Actually, my first B was found running around and was not altered. Always a possibility since the canine need of procreation is pretty darn high up there with food, water, and air…... Oh I'm sure it does happen and will continue to happen but I just don't see it happening as much as rescues claim it happens. I know for a fact some shelters (the one I worked at did!) will label dogs as rarer breeds to get them adopted faster. We had two scruffy "doodle" mix mutts and the animal warden INSISTED they were Wired haired pointing griffons. LOL.

Thank you very much for the info. I will have to try the time out. He was crate trained as far as being house broken, but now when I put brownie in the crate all he does is whine.. I do have 2 older dogs. one that plays with him and the other, well he just growls at brownie. The mother that was there when I got Brownie was a white shepard, maybe that is where the broad nose comes in.
