Sleep yodeling

Basenji Talk
  • Hansel "talks" in his sleep all the time!!! he will whimper, snore, yelp, and kind of "chase" (he moves his legs a little) it is SO cute. I am sure it is that RASCALLY rabbit he is always trying to get but his leash is attached to a rather large slow human and he never gets to finish the chase,,, only in his dreams. :)

  • My OJ would howl in his sleep, especially when the girls were in seaso… most of the rest of mine would "talk" now and again in their sleep, OJ was the only one that really howled... sound asleep... howling at the moon

Yes, that is what I have seen too. Querk did that a couple times in the fall…and it about scared Tim and I to death...it is a creepy, erie, long howl...and he did seem to be completly asleep.

  • Lycia is ridiculously active in her sleep, she will "woof", cry, "puff", growl, run - and raise the hair on her back - almost every night ;) she has a active dream life.

Exactly… totally creepy, erie and longgggg..... The first time he did it, I didn't have a clue what the heck was going on...gggg

Jet the tri-ing does this every once in a while. Wakes everyone else up, eerie as heck. Sounds like a death howl (for lack of a better discription). My others haven't done this.

  • Ellie will howl in her sleep from time to time – very eerie and mournful sound.

And you're telling me this now? …ggg... there goes my good night's rest.. ;)

That's it! Bf and I were also looking at eachother like.. Oh my..

  • Nala only woofs and wimpers on occasion. I feel the need to wake her - as if she's having a nightmare :o…I can't even imagine a creepy, eerie, long yodel at night!

  • Janneke, just saw your post. Hehe. It's nothing too loud, I just notice cause I'm always awake when it happens. She has never woken me up before… well not since she was 10 weeks old and was a little terror about going pee!! ;)

  • our older male has howled in his sleep twice…he is 7 years old...its always a long death howl that scares everyone...he does not wake up...it reminds me of a "i am lost where is everybody, come find me"

I agree, it can happen with any pet. Moe (not a basenji) will roll in anything, the nastier the better (or so he thinks). He has come inside with some crazy gooey stuff stuck on his coat, and he hates being bathed more than Cody. We've had cats splash through paint while we were painting boats, wood stain, and all kinds of stuff. For the oil incident though, the baking soda helped a lot. I caked it on the oily areas and rubbed it in good, then I took the wash cloth and lathered it with Dawn and scrubbed the areas lightly. It took a while, but I really didn't want to risk him grooming himself and ingesting any oil. LOL Basenjimama! I can sympathize. When I first adopted Cody (er… became his slave) and gave him his first bath, I think every inch of my bathroom was cover in either soap or water, and that happened every time I gave him a bath to a lesser degree. While sometimes the shower is a little awkward, it is easier than trying to keep him in the bathtub.

Thanks woofless I did take everyones advice and would egg her on and I managed to get her to baroo twice but it took like 5 minutes of voice and I was almost horse each time. lol this was weeks ago now and I havent got her to do it again beside I was exhaused after the effort. I am resigned to a silent dog except for an occational whine. We cant even get her to howl. All my friends think I should be thanking the lord for such a quiet dog but like you I was hoping to get the yodel that I remembered so well as a kid. I havent been to the dog park yet maybe the excitement will get it out of her I hope to get there tomorrow since i'm off work.

My Mr Eko will be 10 weeks tomorrow. He is a very good puppy too, as he sleeps in his own bed in our bedroom, and has never attepmted to get onto the bed (yet). ALthough we would love to have him in bed, we have decided to keep it as it is (as long as it lasts, i should say instead). He is also very quiet when crated (although i still have to get over my own distress for restricting him while we are at work). But he does love to chew!!!

@Lenora: He sounds pretty typical basenji to me Cheryl. They want to be where you, and make themselves completely comfortable on you. Abbey used to be a terrible mouther when she was little (she's 3 now) and I taught her No Bite. Kiss. When she'd start to mouth at my hand or whatever, I'd say No Bite, Kiss, and she would give me a little lick instead. I too use the No Bite, Kisses and he is getting there. If he gets too rough, I just pull away and ignore him, it doesn't take long before he will reach over and give a gentle kiss. I am having so much fun with him. He is the most loving dog I have ever owned and we are learning lots from each other. Yesterday he "saved" me from the UPS truck! He saw it pull up outside on the curb and he set off with a series of barks that hit a pitch that hurt! Of course once he saw the man get out, he was all wiggles and wanting to play with him. :)

Yeah… you should have heard Jazz at the dog show today when another dog got too close! And the poor dog hadn't even done anything. Now, why that dog triggered the response when several others had gone with little or no attention paid, I do not know. Then we came home and I took her for a quick jog down the road, and the neighbors {soooooooooo annoying} young boxer ran out to say hello and Jazzy's first response was to growl and snap. She is fine with Basenji's, but oh! what a bitch with anything else.
