My Red boy, Congo, had an awesome BAROO! We were so happy to hear it every time! He couldn't do it enough for my amusement! I don't remember at what age the BAROO's stopped but I'm thinking 14 or 15. When he was in his prime, I think he yodeled at least once a week. Bandit, my 7 year old tri girl, has never BAROOED in her life! She purrs like a cat and cries like a newborn baby, but never a yodel. Hunter, my 2 year old BRAT tri, has a great yodel. His voice usually cracks mid-yodel. Almost like he was a heavy smoker at some point in his short life! He also had the loudest yawn on the planet!:)

@renaultf1: Honestly, there is nothing cuter than baby yodels!! It is great that Malaika yodels. When Liyah was a pup, if the adults wouldn't play with her, she would bring stuffed animals to her reflection in the stereo cabinet and then would dance around and yodel to her reflection to try to get her to play :D:D. Liyah is the big talker of my 3 - when she wants Brando to play, she will pet him on his head and start talking to him - very comical! :D:D Oh, and we call Brando and Liyah the lovebirds because they are so enthralled with each other! That's so nice :)

Thanks woofless I did take everyones advice and would egg her on and I managed to get her to baroo twice but it took like 5 minutes of voice and I was almost horse each time. lol this was weeks ago now and I havent got her to do it again beside I was exhaused after the effort. I am resigned to a silent dog except for an occational whine. We cant even get her to howl. All my friends think I should be thanking the lord for such a quiet dog but like you I was hoping to get the yodel that I remembered so well as a kid. I havent been to the dog park yet maybe the excitement will get it out of her I hope to get there tomorrow since i'm off work.

Oh to have a silent Basenji. Our Bitty has, unfortunately, learned that the loudest dog gets fed first, and yips and yodels from the instant I move toward the garage door (where we have to keep their food) until I put her dinner before her. Her other loud period is every evening when my wife comes in the door from work, all 3 of the puppers flock to her and vocally announce 'momma's home' at the top of their lungs. It must be wonderful to be so loved, ha ha.

Having your Basenjis get used to crates by riding does help…in the long run.. the start besides things like feeding them in the crate... to associate the crate with fun times.... and when you are at an event... the crate becomes as safe haven... and a place to crash... at our lure trial in March... Kobey was there.. I always have crates in my van... and with so much activity going on... Kobey was very happy to be in the crate and taking a nap....

Joey gave his first 'Baroooooo' today when I didn't give him as much attention as he wanted after I came home. I was surprised and thrilled! It was so fun to hear it since most of the time he is quiet unless growling when someone disturbs him while he is sleeping. Is there a difference between a baroo and a yodel? Once before when I didn't give him adequate attention, he batted my leg to let me know, Hey I'm down here waiting for more attention!
