Rash

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Basenji and rashes

Cali just started to get these little red lumps all over her belly….taken her to the vet tomorrow.

  • Poor Cali, I hope everything is okay. Keep us posted on what the vet says.

  • Basenjis seem to have sensitive skin. One of ours often had rashes as you're describing when he was young. Twice we had to take him to the vet. A couple shots and prescription Benadryl cleared them up. The vet said we could use children's Benadryl as soon as we saw any signs. It also helped with a few wasp stings. You may want to ask your vet about doing the same. If so they can recommend a dosage. Good luck.

  • I recently noticed redness around one of my B's neck & I thought it was the chain choke that might be irritating it so I stopped using for a couple of days. Then he developed 3 red bumps (they look like human zits). Not sure what this is?? Any thoughts?

Maybe I should switch to nylon choke ?

  • Cali had the same thing…so I took her to the Vet on Sat.......they said it was common for puppies.

so they gave me Clavamox for the lumps...twice a day
also Hydroxyzine for the itching 1 tablet 8-12 hours as needed...

and this shampoo Chlorhexiderm Shampoo....2-3 days aweek

thats all the info I have..and will let you all know on how things go with that......cause i was going to try Benadryl.

Did she always have them or did they start after something/some time? Do antihistamines clear the problem?

My Teddy had/has what I would call a rash as well. My vet said it is an allergy (he does occasionally lick his paws also) - at first he thought it was a food allergy but it would go away when the spring rains came. It appears to be related to molds and dust mites instead. I give him salmon oil (not the pills but the real oil), freeze his kibble, regularly clean his blankets etc., and give him oatmeal shampoo baths when it really acts up. I also use dermacton cream if his skin gets too dry. We seem to have it under control.

@Hana: She is 10.5 months now so we'll be thinking about transitioning at some point to an adult food. Here's a link to many of the dry foods lots of folks on this list use. http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-reviews/dry/ IMO, if you can afford the 5 star foods, go for it. Kipawa eats Taste of The Wild Bison formula and loves it! There's no grain or corn or 'meal' in it.

@hotrodruby: frankee my 3 year old has also recently developed a red rash and blistering on the left side of his groin area and was licking it constantly, not sure what it could be, we put a cone on to prevent him from licking it. will be taking him to the vet tomorrow. not sure if it is a yeast infection or rashe from something else. @tanza: Could also be a reaction to some kind of bite… here is another thought... when did he have he last round of shots? But in the end, I think I would take a trip to the Vet... could just be a little ear infection going on... they can and do get yeast infections in the ears.. and I have found that puppies for what ever reason get dirty ears... and slight infections. Kobey had one when he was about 4/5 months old... His second round of puppy shots he got on the 7th of this month. His next round isn't until the 6th of March. I am going to call the vet this afternoon & ask them if we should bring him in. His ears do get really dirty with wax buildup. I have actually used a q-tip (he's gotten a little better) & cleaned them almost every other day in the past week because everytime I look down there I see some buildup. Maybe that itself is another sign that something more is wrong. I will check his paws & rear tonight for any signs of an allergy but I examined him a lot last night (after noticing his ears) & didn't see anything else out of the ordinary.
