Lure coursing training

Basenji Training
  • Today was the big day!!!

    And it was great!!!!!!

Lot of dogs, every dog coursed twice, first time we were numbers 21 (Buana and Chafuko) and 22 (Hailey)
From number 1 to 20 the B's were screaming… they wanted to run sooooo bad.. hahaha

De B's first coursed a "whippet" course and did it great!!! (it was a training, not a competition) Chafuko was the winner, he made some nice shortcuts hahaha They both were very fast and loved it!

For Hailey this was the first time coursing and she had much interest but when the lure made a turn, she lost it and came running back to us (she's so cute.. hahaha)

Second time, we could have numbers 1(Hailey) and 3(Buana and Chafuko) because we had to drive a few hours to get back home on time.
Hailey had some more interest and ran a bit better, she lost the lure after a 300 meters and again she came running back to us (and were afraid she won't listen to us when she's of the leash... haha)

The B's ran a real sighthound course (a longer distance) and they ran it very fast, they didn't want to stop... Chafuko almost killed the lure...(well, destroyed... there is nothing to kill about it)
When we walked away they keep screaming untill they were enouch meters away from the start!!!

It was great, we were invited to come training any time we want (so I think were going every time... haha)

We weren't able to made pics (pregnant women, husband and three crazy screaming dogs..) but I believe Janneke's boyfriend made a lot of nice pics! (I hope she will post them at the forum :D there were lot of very nice sighthouds too)

I won't say how Tillo did it... that's Janneke's story.. But I think they liked it :D

  • Hey great news! Sounds like it was a lot of fun I want to lure my 8 month old soon.

  • Aaahh, that sounds like so much fun, for the dogs and for you both. I hoep Janneke has some pics..can't wait to see them.

  • I took Gossy to straight-line and oval races a few weeks ago to see if she'd like it. Oh my did she ever - now when we drive past the place where these races take place she gets so excited !!!
They don't have races until the end of summer now so she'll have to wait to get certified :(
I'm trying to set up a lure with the fishing pole so she can practise until then.

  • I was actually thinking of making something like taht to see if Otis would be interested..great minds think alike..

  • yess it was a great day :D cant wait to see the pictures of Job ( Janneke's boyfriend ) that he made from our dogs too!
we only took our galgo and 2 ibizans to the coursing, that gives us all our hands full enough haha the basenjis and our oldest ibizan hound can come the next time, allthough they enjoy the racing track too! ( the settlement of the racing track allows us to take all dogs at the same time and not having our hands full with these 6 haha )

And yes... I liked Cy and Smitty also... :D

@seko: The afghan won over Uku (b/w) and over Valhi (r/w) she got a fright at the begining at the hairy giant dog behind her, stopped for a bit then ran again really well untill the afghan decided to play with her and she couldn't finish properly; the afghan didn't even get disqualified for annoying my dog and got better note  That doesn't sound very fair:mad:

Yay glad to see some more local interest! As far as training, there is a group called SONG (Sighthounds of North Georgia) that does informal practices once a month or so depending on man power & weather. These practices are a great way to introduce a new dog to the lure. However, for most dogs its an instinctual thing & they don't need much training. Lola & Callie both caught on to it their first time. I just let them both watch other dogs doing it first, then let them go & they did their thing. Website for SONG: http://www.nghounds.info/index_files/Page430.htm It doesn't get updated frequently, but go to the lure coursing practice tab, scroll to the bottom & there are instructions to get on the e-mail list for upcoming practices. Hope to see you lure coursing soon!

@lvoss: In order to get a JC your dog does not need to run with another dog. A JC is earned by your dog running the course by itself. It must pass 2 JC tests to earn the title. To certify a dog for ASFA the dog must run with another dog and show that it will not interfere. D'oh! I got the two mixed up :) But that's what I meant, lol…. Most of the lure trials we attended were ASFA trials....I think we did do practice runs at ONE AKC trial, but Jibini was less than 1 year old so I am pretty sure thats why we never did a JC "qualifying" run. I'm tempted to get back into it now that I have my own "pair".....but it always seems money is an issue that makes a 300-400 mile weekend jaunt a bit out of reach!! I also found it disheartening that there were so few Basenjis entered in Florida lure courses, and among those I met, nobody had dogs who could run with a strange dog. However, I enjoyed the time I spent at Lure trials and letting Jibini run....it was fun, even if we didn't get any "alphabet soup" for Jibini's name!!! Defintely an experience well worth it :)

@Sunny: At what age is the best time to start lure coursing ?? And is there a course in oklahoma ?? Ide love to get Sandie into something like that, if she is interested… Sunny, You can start very short practices with puppies but you can't actually enter a trial until a dog is at least a year old. Coursing is available in Oklahoma. Your best bet is to contact Richard Stilwell. Richard and his wife Linda have been involved with lure coursing Basenjis for a long time and they can get you started in your area. Send me a private message for Richard email My best wishes. :)
