    The "interdeterminate" result comes when a dog has inherited an incomplete set of markers. When this happens there is no way to know whether they have the inherited the gene with the partial set of markers or not so they are labeled "indeterminate".

    im still confused, how can you have indeterminate between clear and carrier but not between carrier and affected and why does a lot of family members come back as indeterminate between clear and carrieri could understand if it was only one or two but it is most of them

    Since this is just a marker test, "Indeterminate" results mean that some of the markers are found, and some are not. So the gene could be present, or not present. Indeterminate actually could be affected, carrier or clear, it is just not possible to tell, because the markers are incomplete.

    Marker testing is a little trickier than direct testing. It is good, but there are holes in the test, since the genes and markers aren't totally "fixed" in their positions on the genome. Markers and the genes they are used to track can become separated by mutations.

    I was at the 2007 Nationals and asked about this and they said that they just haven't seen any Indeterminate between Carrier and Affected at that time. I find that hard to believe also but the lab is sticking to that explanation.

    As far as some families have lots of IND, an IND has 1 set of markers for Clear and one IND set so when bred according to the guidelines they will produce either Clear or IND offspring. It also seems that in some families that area is more prone to changes so high rates of IND occur. The lab is working to zero in on the gene so all of the IND results can be resolved.

    well i know of one family that produced affected and IND in the same litter that was why i was asking i will be glad when the gene is found then we can all be sure

    A carrier can produce, Carriers, Affecteds, Clears, and IND depending on who they are bred to.

    I have seen them produce Affected but those dogs really should be Indeterminate between Carrier and Clear but the lab never responded about that.

    The possible outcomes should be Clear, Carrier, IND, Indeterminate between Carrier and Affected based on the explanation the lab has given us.

    That is a huge relief about the cheek swab…She absolutely HATED having her blood drawn and has been mistrustful of the vet and vet techs ever since. I didn't not realize that there were many errors in the original test. I stopped frequenting this forum shortly after I had her test done and haven't really heard anything from the basenji world until I got the e-mail. I will definitely get this re-test done as soon as possible and will pick up some strips tomorrow so I can start testing her urine. Thankfully she has not been showing any signs of poor health and has always done well on checkups.

    @YodelDogs: I cannot even begin to fathom any normal diagnostic tests that would cost $1,000? A senior profile at my vet clinic includes a physical exam, complete blood panel, urinalysis, and fecal exam is is only about $100. LOL give me your vet's name. At my vet it's nearly 200. I'll drive to Atlanta! To the OP, yes get urine tested for infection first. Bladder/kidney could cause lots of pain walking and picking up. Start simple. Also, on the weight….I know folks here get tired of my saying it, but... first treat for worms even if none show up in fecal. DO NOT USE OTC, get from vet. Then, order cyproheptidine. It is a cheap antihistamine that works miracles with increasing appetite. My basenji was getting to the bone stage, massive testing... all normal. She simply didn't care if she ate. No matter what your vet says, you don't go by AMOUNT for what is right, you go by results. If they eat and are thin, they need MORE FOOD or food with higher calories. Also, you might try something like FASTRACK, healthy bacteria which helps them USE the food they eat much better.

    I would not have posted if I beleived it to be a scam. For folks who do worry about such things - one can always let the person know they would be more than willing to donate directly to the vet clinic for care of their pet. M.C. I too beleive they either got what they needed to help their little girl or they realized they put too much info on craigslist. I am hoping for the former. As for Drew - yes - that is a picture of him. If you really want to know - email me privately and I can send you a copy of an article I was asked to write for an Aussie pubication re: him.

    And chances are that your vet will tell you that there is no test. Just because it has been available for nearly two years does not mean that they know it is now here. You can do the fanconi tests without seeing a vet at all. Finger's crossed both your Bs come back NOT affected.

    @jessi76: another vac I didn't see on your list is Lyme. Ask your vet about it IF tics are prevelant in your area. where I live, ALOT of dogs are coming down with Lyme disease (spread by deer tics), so I didn't even think twice about getting my dog the vaccine. although we keep him on a flea & tic preventative, the vaccine is another added precaution. like I said though, only if tics are an issue in your area. No, they don't seem to be a big deal here, the worst "pest" we have aside from fleas are chiggers or you may know of them as sand fleas. Thanks for you help.
