Lure coursing practice in Michigan

Basenji Training
  • Can you believe it? We're actually going to have a practice in MI! lol Just got the word today that practice is on next weekend. Details below. Anyone in the area who's interested in getting into lure coursing, or just wants to let their dog get some exercise, come check it out! I left off Meg's contact info, so if anyone wants to get ahold of her, contact me privately and I'll send it to you. I am hoping to be there for the first couple hours, we'll see how flexible work is. So I can help folks learn the ropes and what to do.

Hope to see a few of you there!

MGA (Michigan Gazehound Association) is offering lure coursing practice-not sure if we will have an ASFA judge present for pre-certs
April 26, 2009 Sunday starting at around 10 am we will have practice in Stockbridge MI-
We will be offering lure coursing practice for any breed/mix canine- with a course laid out for about 550 yards–if you have a young/new dog we can do shorter distances.
The field is not entirely fenced but surrounded by woods and other fields-
There is well water available but bring your own shade-
Cost $2 per run and we need you to sign a waiver for liability stuff-
If you have mapquest.com put in my address
    4700 Swan Rd

and we will be about an 1/8 of a mile farther east on the left -just past the barn close to the road-
It is my Aunt Judy's farm but she doesn't live there she rented out the house--

Coming from Detroit take 96 west to exit 122 (Webberville/Stockbridge) M52-

There is LC in Columbia Ky the weekend of 17 Nov. there will be practices on the Sat around 3 pm. The next closer would be the Indianapolis area the weekend before that. Most Of us drive 6-12 hours for any lC events in the Midwest

@Mia: I tried an online seach for lure coursing in Orlando but nothing. The closest one is about an hour away, actually ASFA only cites 3 in the whole state of Florida! If anyone can give me advice on how to find a club and get my puppy running that would be great. Thanks If they are not listed with ASFA or not AKC ( and I check AKC site and looks like only one club in AKC does coursing in FLA, Sunshine State Coursing Club of Central Florida) most likely you will not find one any closer. You might try NOTRA (oval track and see if any in FLA) but usually the same clubs that course do NOTRA. Also you might contact the club in Fla and ask them..

@lvoss: In order to get a JC your dog does not need to run with another dog. A JC is earned by your dog running the course by itself. It must pass 2 JC tests to earn the title. To certify a dog for ASFA the dog must run with another dog and show that it will not interfere. D'oh! I got the two mixed up :) But that's what I meant, lol…. Most of the lure trials we attended were ASFA trials....I think we did do practice runs at ONE AKC trial, but Jibini was less than 1 year old so I am pretty sure thats why we never did a JC "qualifying" run. I'm tempted to get back into it now that I have my own "pair".....but it always seems money is an issue that makes a 300-400 mile weekend jaunt a bit out of reach!! I also found it disheartening that there were so few Basenjis entered in Florida lure courses, and among those I met, nobody had dogs who could run with a strange dog. However, I enjoyed the time I spent at Lure trials and letting Jibini run....it was fun, even if we didn't get any "alphabet soup" for Jibini's name!!! Defintely an experience well worth it :)
