@daureen - I will also say that my C-Me picked me... note however that most all responsible breeders will pick the pup for the home.. this is why breeders want to know all about the home/family/lifestyle, we want them to be in their forever homes... that said there are exceptions.. in my case this was a puppy back from a breeding... I had the choice of the 5 bitches in the litter but from the moment that I went in the house, this was the pup that came to me and didn't want to leave. LOL... and in some cases there could be two that are about the same and would fit the family... then they have a choice. My C-Me was a great choice and while there were others in the litter that was maybe a bit nicer as a show puppy, but I could not turn away from this girl that picked me... She is a Dual Champion and whelped a wonderful litter... And she is a loving girl to all in the family

Welcome to the forum!

Thanks for the welcome! I got my Basenji at a cut rate price because the mother had papers, but the father was given to the owners of the mother when he left to go overseas in the military, and he hadn't kept papers. I saw both parents though, and they were beautiful animals, well mannered, and the same colors as Shaye. So, she is not papered, but, we got her as a pet, and she is surely true to the breed, so that was fine with us. I am hoping once she is older, to find someplace in Florida to get her involved in lure coursing - it looks like a lot of fun for them.

Were the parents tested for Fanconi Syndrome using the DNA Marker test? If so was one of the parents Probably Clear? If not, please get your puppy tested by registering with the Canine Project, http://www.caninephenome.org/ and ordering a kit from OFA, https://secure.offa.org/cart.html
-
Please make sure YOUR b is tested.
The above site will help you.
It will tell you what you need to know about the health of your pup.Oops, sorry, I meant to add welcome to the forum first!

Thanks for your concern regarding getting Shaye tested - she has her second visit with our vet on Thursday, and I will be sure to bring the subject up with him and see that she is tested using the DNA Marker Test you refer to. I had read on another site that this is a problem Basenjis have, so it's good to find out for sure.
-
Many vets are not aware of the test so unless they have other basenji clients that have provided them with the information, they may not know about it. The test kit is a something that you can do at home, you just need to order it from the OFA website and fill out the registration form at the Canine Phenome Project so you can print out a test request form.

This is not something that your Vet does, it is a cheek swab that you do and send in. You order it from OFA, register your B on the CPP site (registration is free) and send in the cheek swab.
Many Vets are not even aware of the DNA test for Fanconi and many Vets are not even familar with Fanconi -
Thank you for that information - I will go to the site and see about getting that test kit.
-
Evidently I cannot register in the Phenome project they ask for the registration numbers, and Shaye is not registered with AKC or anyplace - guess we are second class citizens. So I will hope for her health, and see if my vet can get anywhere with the request for tests - the site for the test kit also asks for registration numbers, kennel, etc.
-
That is okay, you can put Not Registered for that part of the form and they will assign her a NOREG number.
-
Hi Susan, what part of Florida do you live in? We are in the Tampa Bay area, and have a lot of basenji folks around here. shaye is very pretty!
Welcome to the Forum, you will find lots of good info.

Welcome to the pack I look forward to seeing more photos of your baby!

If you go to the OFA site (www.offa.org) and then put in the breed as Basenjis and the Fanconi for the test, you can see all that have been done, we are up to 2473 DNA tests and many are for non-registered Basenjis that have come from rescue or that don't have AKC registrations. Many people on this list have had their B's tested and are in the same situation you are.

To MacPack's question - we are also in the Tampa Bay area. I did not know there were many Basenjis here - I get lots of "what kind of dog is she?" from people we run into. We sure love her, and I know you must love yours as well. We won't be sorry to lose certain aspects of the puppy stage, but still, she's great.

to Ivoss and Tanza - thanks for the information - I'll try again to register for the test.
