Producing immature red blood cells

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • My oldest male, Mansa Musa, is 15 or 16. His most recent visit to the vet was to evaluate his quality of life. The blood tests revel a low red blood cell count and most of the cells being produced are immature and are simply exiting the body with his urine.

Can I reasonable expect that he will slip into a coma and never come out?

  • What did your Vet say to expect? Since the red blood cells carry oxygen to the tissues and organs (including the brain), I would think that you would expect organ failures and at some point unconsciousness. Does Mansa Musa get around okay? I'm sorry that you are facing this difficulty with your old guy. This is the tough part.

  • Vet said that he might experience fainting spells. I'm assuming that if blood is unhealthy, it can't do its job properly. Things like carry oxygen, nutrients and toxins to the appropriate organs. I'm hoping the best case is he will go from unconsciouness to death.

He got hit by a car about 10 years ago and got his pelvis screwed back together. Other than that he gets around fine.

    thanx

@tanza said in What are Blood Titers?: Benefits are that we are not over vaccinating our dogs. Do try to find a copy of 'Who Killed The Darling Buds of May' on Amazon or wherever ! By Catherine O'Driscoll, subtitled along the spine with 'What Vets don't tell you about Vaccines.' And on the back 'Read this book before you vaccinate your dog or cat.' ISBN 0 9523048 1 3 Very illuminating ! My first copy (this is another book I have lent out and had to buy again and which is now chained to the bookshelf) was sent to me by a very responsible and well-known breeder in USA.

does he lay in the grass? ant bites or sensitivity to the grass on the skin, ever sit on the grass yourself and get those funny red spots and or indentions? maybe the same thing or him laying on a rug that has been cleaned with something he may be allergic to? If they do not clear up in a day or two or get worse; definitely see a Vet!

We did a biopsy a week into it and it was not cancerous, so waiting for the bump to go away was the only other option. I though surgery would be too intrusive in the nose area. Kiya had to endure two weeks of wearing the cone day and night to prevent her from scratching her nose. She seems to get all kinds of things around her nose, just recently she got bitten by a bee nosing around in the grass and was back into the cone for a week.

My son also gets red bumps on his inner arms when he holds Magnum. Didn't help any to bathe him (Magnum, LOL!). They don't really seem to itch and go away fairly quickly. My son just doesn't pick him up much anymore. Magnum probably prefers that anyway!
