Angry Red Rash ???

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • You can also trying using Tea Tree Oil around the infected area (and even on the area). Usually the taste and smell of Tea Tree Oil is enough to deter them from licking the area…

  • @jmcduff:

I have attached pictures of Tyson's rash. These images are at its worse. It has significantly improved with the hydorcortisone cream.

I'm glad you posted those. My foster Cairo has been licking the same area and has developed a rash that looks exactly like the one in Tyson's pics. We were trying to figure out what the heck it was and what we could treat it with topically that he wouldn't just lick off. I guess we will get to make a trip to the vet as well.

  • This could be totally off track, but when my basenji boy gets some type of food he reacts to, he lickes the inside of his legs where your dogs have issues.
If I switch the food, and add benadril he stops with the licking.
Again, this is a non medical judgement.

  • Thanks to everyone for all the advice, its all very much appreciated. Im happy to report that the rash is considerably less angry than, even, yesterday ;) . The way I have been keeping the cream on, is what the Vet advised, to walk him as soon as you have applied it. A 10-15 min walk, is enough for the cream to soak in, and do its business :) . I then feed him, after the walk, so that gives him a bit more time, leaving it alone, to soak in, while he eats. ;)

O.T…...I am so glad this forum is here, the amount of info that is freely given, by the members, is truly incredible. The only thing that I get jealous about, is the incredible range of different dry foods, that you all have to choose from... We are extremely limited in Aus, and even more so where I live, (the little island hanging off the state of Victoria :p). Im thinking that the Barf diet might just be the way to go. Im currently learning all that goes along with the correctly balanced Barf diet... The other thing I need before I start, is a decent sized freezer too :)

Anyway, again thanks to all, for the advice, its very much appreciated :D .

  • Yes, if the quality of food is not available to you, you might be better off either doing raw or your own cooked diet….

  • Tyson's rash is also looking better today.

All my B's are on raw and some cooked but not much. They love it. They get mostly chicken and venison when I can get it.

  • That rash is EXACTLY what my bulldog would get, and in the same area.

Weeps and then gets crusty? Has a weird odor?

My vet put our Snorky on the topical Gentocin. It was like a miracle. Neosporin and hydrocortizone were only a very temp. fix. Gentocin worked immediately, didn't sting, didn't stain, or dry the skin to the point of flaking.

Yeast infections love a damp environment. Keeping the area dry will help curb another outbreak.

  • Just to let everybody know, that Saba's rash has cleared up beautifully :). We will keep whats left of the cream, for the next B rash, am sure there will be others ;)… We are continuing on with the Omega 3 tablets too. We havent seen any changes to his scurfy coat yet, but I suspect its too early for changes, time will tell, on that one !!!

  • frankee my 3 year old has also recently developed a red rash and blistering on the left side of his groin area and was licking it constantly, not sure what it could be, we put a cone on to prevent him from licking it. will be taking him to the vet tomorrow. not sure if it is a yeast infection or rashe from something else.

does he lay in the grass? ant bites or sensitivity to the grass on the skin, ever sit on the grass yourself and get those funny red spots and or indentions? maybe the same thing or him laying on a rug that has been cleaned with something he may be allergic to? If they do not clear up in a day or two or get worse; definitely see a Vet!

@Hana: She is 10.5 months now so we'll be thinking about transitioning at some point to an adult food. Here's a link to many of the dry foods lots of folks on this list use. http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-reviews/dry/ IMO, if you can afford the 5 star foods, go for it. Kipawa eats Taste of The Wild Bison formula and loves it! There's no grain or corn or 'meal' in it.

@Burma: they said that the vet did do a skin scraping, i dont recall them saying for mites. she eats beneful healthy radiance dry dog food-we thought that could help her skin stuff… You might want to try a better quality food and one without any grains, there are a number of them. And you should check and make sure that she was checked for mites. If you call your Vet they should have it on her records.

If he still wears the same collar and it is the culprit, it will irritate already raw skin and prevent complete healing. I know the holidays are usually tight for everyone, but perhaps finding a (maybe no-so-stylish) collar made of a completely different material and without dyes would stop the cycle. That's what eventually worked for Elvira, my cat. If it is confined to one spot where there an item directly touches the skin on a regular basis, it sounds more like contact dermatitis to me. Any creams may exacerbate the situation. If it was a food allergy, I would expect a more widespread problem. I would suggest, if he wears a cloth or nylon collar, get a natural leather collar with stainless steel loops rather than coated brass. Since colorful nylon and cloth seem to be the rage right now, it may be a little more difficult to find. The payoff is the leather collar will last much longer than cloth or nylon. If it is felt a cream or ointment must be used, break open a Vitamin E capsule and rub the goo on his rash. It is odorless and if Kiya feels she must be Little Miss Nursemaid, the Vitamin E will benefit her as well.

@tanza: Could also be a reaction to some kind of bite… here is another thought... when did he have he last round of shots? But in the end, I think I would take a trip to the Vet... could just be a little ear infection going on... they can and do get yeast infections in the ears.. and I have found that puppies for what ever reason get dirty ears... and slight infections. Kobey had one when he was about 4/5 months old... His second round of puppy shots he got on the 7th of this month. His next round isn't until the 6th of March. I am going to call the vet this afternoon & ask them if we should bring him in. His ears do get really dirty with wax buildup. I have actually used a q-tip (he's gotten a little better) & cleaned them almost every other day in the past week because everytime I look down there I see some buildup. Maybe that itself is another sign that something more is wrong. I will check his paws & rear tonight for any signs of an allergy but I examined him a lot last night (after noticing his ears) & didn't see anything else out of the ordinary.
