Going in the middle of the night?

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • This has happened twice in the last week:

    • Ziggy got up in the middle of the night to do the "poop dance". I knew that he had to either pee or poop, and he peed a great quantity on the bathroom floor.
    • Last night, he awoke in the middle of the night and had to pee (a lot) and also pooped.

Nothing else in his diet, habits, or daily routine has changed, and I'm worried but not panicking; I'll monitor him for a few days and see if it happens again. About 2 weeks ago, his test strip for Fanconi was negative.

Has anyone else had this experience, of a dog who out of the blue has to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night?

    Lori

  • To make sure, 1st be sure that your test strips are current and valid… then also I would recommend that you test 4 or 5 days in a row and maybe 2x's a day just to be sure.

Could also be UTI, but urine culture would be needed to validate that...

I would be concerned about "peeing" great quantity .... and think that maybe a trip to the Vet is in order

In the days before computers, I kept a book (now its all carefully entered in to special folders on the 'machine' and provides me with a complete history) - total sickness record, including jabs and innoculations (and cost of pills / treatment), of each dog. Weight at birth of puppies, ease of whelping. Onset of seasons, boys starting to react (chuddering and showing interest), date relative to onset of color of the first time the girl's tail went over. Just about every aspect of each dog is carefully logged and catalogued.

@lanemichelleandolimar: recently, michelle and i have noticed our beloved olimars brown coat is fading. what does this mean? should we worry? what can we do to prevent it?:( Most likely blowing coat (shedding out the old coat). Not to worry, totally normal

@Quercus: I don't know if this is at all accurate…but his theory made sense to me. Also, some Bs are prone to crystal formation, but often don't develop a full blown UTI. There is something that some folks add to the water to change the PH of the urine, but I don't remember what...maybe someone else can help me out with that. I was told that crystals were a sign and led to kidney stones?–not necessarily a sign of UTIs? There were special dog foods for this--to keep crystals from forming because I had to use one at one time (this was about 10-12 years ago), but my vet told me that the good quality dog foods now are formulated to avoid crystal formation, so you don't usually have to get special food.

My male does this every few weeks too, I have yet to find out the actual reason, but maybe I'll try feeding him more often. I have been feeding him only in the mornings, with treats throughout the day. He only throws up in the morning before breakfast if I am lazy about getting out of bed by 7.
