Testing for Fanconi - degree of color change

  • Need clarification on reading the Diastix. "Normal" color (no sugar in urine) is bluish green. How much does color of strip change if Fanconi is indicated? The range of colors goes from slightly greenish (hard to tell from "normal" color!!) to brown. Also, does color go back to normal if Fanconi is being treated properly with diet and pills?

  • Any change in color should be followed up with a visit to the vet. In the early stages the dog may spill only small amounts of sugar or spill intermittenly.

  • Lisa is correct that dogs in the early stages of Fanconi Syndrome spill intermittently. Spilling sugar is spilling sugar. If they are not spillng this week but were last week.. does NOT mean they are no longer afflicted.

It is imperative that your vet listen to you and not tell you that the intermittent spilling of sugar is NOT consistent with Fanconi Syndrome. Spilling sugar is NOT normal for a dog.

Any deviation from the test-strip should be considered as spilling sugar. An appointment with the vet should be scheduled and tests need to be run: Venus Blood Gas panel, CBC, Urinalysis.

Download the current protocol to give to your vet from the BCOA website (www.basenji.org).

  • When our bitch started we saw high protein and a ph high and low on the urinstix we used. After a half year she also had sugar and we follow the program from USA veteriner. She was ill in Fanconi almost 2½ years and we say goodby to her 2002. Lucky to live close to (5 minutes by car) a very big animal hospital and they take care of her from the beginning to the end.

We test our basenji for sugar 4 times each year…....Sugar = Fanconi

  • Really you should test at least monthly for Fanconi starting at age 3… but that is not to say that they can't start spilling sugar earlier.. And really in the beginning it is possible that if you are only doing it once a month and only one day, you might miss it all together.. I know a couple of Basenjis that only showed spilling sugar 1 out of 4 days in the beginning, so really best to do a few days in a row every month. Since the strips do not last long, no use is wasting them.

@etzbseder: Thanks, I've seen that before, but forgot about it. After looking at that, it shows that my answer would be: Clear pups ONLY means that neither parent is affected, and that does not change with multiple clear pups. The only thing that shows any determination of the parents is a test of the parent themselves (or if their grandparents are clear). correct. The more clear pups (with no affecteds or carriers) you had from the breeding of the same two animals, the more LIKELY it is that the parents are clear…but it certainly would not be a for sure.

@Terry: I heard a rumor, wondered if anyone knows if it's true. The rumor was that an affected dog has been identified with 2 clear parents. Pat, I know you're usually up on this… Terry That seems to be the case, Lisa will most likely also chime in. They are now retest that dog along with his parents. As we all know there is always human error and the samples may have been mismarked. I have no doubt in the test (and I know that others will mostly likely use this as a way to discount the test), but I will stand on the over 1100 samples that have already been done and they all seem to be as they should. IMO and I have a sample that was most likely taken at the same time, that there was either a problem when the sample was sent in or there was a problem when the DNA was extracted. At the same time and the sample taken at the same time, there is another dog that is showing as Carrier from two clears… again that is being retested also...

@dmcarty: re: puppy mills and testing only one parent - I know for a FACT that at one place the sire of several years of litters was not the sire - it was a male who had good papers so his name was listed even though he was DEAD. One of the PM's males was the sire of several litters attributed to this OTHER dog. (I happen to know the person who owned the substitute sire) So it is unfortunate but the testing will only be as ethical as those who provide information to the test. Geez I hate to even say that but I am afraid that it's true. No doubt about that… and another reason to only look at AKC who has a DNA parentage program for high volume breeders...
