Lola's Sick: An Update

Basenji Talk
  • Thanks to everybody who gave us advice while Lola was not feeling well a couple of weeks ago. Since then…..
Lola had diarrhea for about 2 weeks off & on. She would be really bad for a day or two, I'd fast her & then give her chicken & rice & then she would get better for a day or two. So I did some more research on the forum, searching old threads and became convinced it was her food, rather than a bug. Last Sunday I went & bought some Blue Buffalo chicken & wild rice puppy formula, and the improvement was instantaneous and amazing!!! We were feeding her Nutro, and after some on the forum mentioned it had caused digestion issues, I had decided to change it. I chose Blue Buffalo based on the advice of several forum members, and the change was literally immediate. She had been fasting for 24 hours, and I didn't want her to starve before I got her new food, so I gave her just a handful of her Nutro in the am. She had diarrhea within a couple of hours. We switched her cold turkey since I figured her stomach couldn't possibly get more upset than it already was. She got Blue Buffalo for dinner, and on her evening walk had a solid poop. Not a single problem since!
Thanks again for helping us to get through this & solve it!

  • Fantastic! I love this forum - it has gotten me thru many trials and tribulations. So glad you've researched and got results for Lola here. Folks on the forum are great for sharing tried and true methods.

  • Its just amazing what bad food can do to our poor b!
    Glad its all worked out!

Ladybasenji, where are you in Quebec? Montreal? We have a place in Gatineau (Aylmer sector) and one of my dogs might even be related to yours. You're experiences with your girl remind me so much of my first basenji, about 20 years ago–it gets easier, I swear! Let me know if you'd like help with Lady--they're nothing like labs and will never be "obedient" but there are tricks for training them : D

You can find a lot of puppy collars at thrift shops for pretty cheap - would never pay full price for one. I'm getting mine at 14 weeks and was told that 8-12 inches was what was being used - then at 4- 6 months graduate to 10-14 inch collar.

This is the main problem right now, I suppose. The civil war's in the Republik of Kongo. I have been talking to a owner of Avongara Basenjis, who's daughter has been in Afrika with the last big expedition. And she had the same thoughts than I have: we thought, that if there are some Basenjis left (the ones which have not landed in the cooking pans), they are spread all over the forrest regions. Most of the human inhabitants of this region have left their houses for the next bigger city to find a little security and help there…. it is absolutely horrible, what mus go on there. But similar actions in other parts of Africa (Mali and Burkina Faso are always at the border of war like actions) plus in lots of these areas there are now many refugees from other areas which make the problems not easier for the habitants....http://www.azawakh.com/azawakhfriends/english/index.html Regards, Esther

Jayden is super gross when it comes to what he'll eat: poop, vomit, and, if he pees on the patio, he'll lick that. Honest!!! We feed him and we feed him very well! Yucccchhhhh! Pat
