Doggy grudge.

Behavioral Issues
  • my lilly seems to have a grudge with the ONE basenji at the dog park when the other basenji comes around lillys hair will stand up and she bares her teeth .BUT this only happens if i am around..it is like she thinks this basenji will hurt me.i dont understand why she does this becuase she plays just fine with all the other basenjis at the park and all the other dogs.if i see the other dog come into the park i have to catch lilly before she sees her and move to a diffrent side….and the weird part is when they first met they got along just fine and its been a more recent occurance....

  • It sounds like resourse guarding to me..but I will be interested in what the others say…

  • Eli has held a grudge against one of the dogs who comes over to play for over a month. Wyatt is a clumsy ACD puppy who is about 3 weeks older than Eli, but much larger. (Wyatt's nickname is Pumbaa if that tells you anything) They played well together for about a month until Wyatt tripped and fell over Eli. Eli wasn't hurt but his dignity was ruffled. Before that they had played together fine, now every time Eli sees him his hackles come up and he gets angry. They can be out together as long as I don't turn my back. The second Eli knows I am not watching he gets an attitude. I am working to get him over this, but it seems like Eli remembers being squished and isn't in any hurry to forgive Wyatt.

Maybe this other Basenji has offended Lilly in some way?

  • im not sure she offended lilly in any way that i saw but it is very possiable that it happened when i wasnt watching.its just starange how angry lilly gets when she simply sees her.

This happens …. kind of like when people make a "quick" decision that they don't like someone.... dogs do the same thing too... Jamari did this and it was so bad with one Brindle male that he could spot/smell him across the size of a football field and would start to growl with his hackles up

  • Zenu holds grudges like crazy too! is this a common basenji behaviour? She used to play with great danes all the time, totally fearless, until one stepped on her accidentally. After that whenever danes came around her she'd tell them off very noisily!
Another time, a lab-mix at the dog park jumped up onto the picnic table where she was napping and stepped on her and scared her good. She let out a terrible banshee scream-growl and drove the dog away, and now even a month later, whenever she sees that dog she'll go up to her and growl a bit just to say she still remembers, and the lab better be careful! Its hilarious to see a little <20lb dog scaring off a big lab mix! But I give her a little poke in the neck if she gets too aggressive and isnt listening to my command to come to me and leave the offending dog alone. That calms her down. I always let her say her piece (and she has a lot to say to dogs she holds a grudge against) but I draw the line at her actively trying to drive them out of the dog park. She could get hurt. Its funny how long they can remember an incident, though.

@Saving so nice to hear there's other people with the same problem! We have been giving regular baths to our b, so I don't know if that really helped or not. Anyways, it took a while for me to bring Nova again to the dog park, because I was a bit afraid the same situation would happen again. I was there a couple of days ago, and no one tried to hump her. (I must say all dogs had same age approx.) Thank you for your comment replies! :)

Sparkle Barkle came into heat in April. Logan went nuts! I was traveling so my wife was saddled with the mayhem. Mayhem doesn't begin to describe the situation. Sparkle should be coming in again within days, I hope, and unfortunately, he won't get any love this time either. He's gonna be a massive handful for at least a MONTH. I'm not traveling this time, so it's all on me. Cross your fingers for Tri females. I want three!

Neutering is not going to help - training is. But a good trainer will train YOU to deal with the dog. If a trainer can get him to behave but you can't - there is little to be gained from paying out money. This is something you should never have allowed to happen, but since it has, I think you should deal with it and @JENGOSMonkey has given you a good idea to start you off. Withdrawing treats is a good idea, but also, get up and walk away. He could be biting to get attention and therefore you withdraw the attention at the first sign of a bite, with a firm NO.

IMO it is a myth that Basenjis cannot have good manners on a walk. Yes, great if you can do off leash, but when circumstances dictate that a leash is necessary then walking calmly without a lot of drama and pulling should be achievable. Personally I do not like long lines or flex leashes. Or allowing dogs to eat whatever they find on the ground, which can in some cases earn you a trip to the vet or worse. Like most dogs, Basenjis are not overly discriminant about what they will ingest. A short leash and being observant can protect them from unwelcome outcomes. Mental exercise will also go a long way with any dog. But one should have a definite opinion about who is running the show, and it should not be the dog....they are quite willing to take up the position should you abdicate.
