Reaction on Rabies Shot!

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Poor Mirtillo…I'm glad he's doing better now.

Chey got hives from her rabies shot this year. That night she jumped up and started running around the house...sat back down, jumped up and started running around again. She was covered in hives. I gave her a benadryl and that took care of it.

When she got her first 3 year shot, she lost a patch of hair at the injection site.

  • Poor Mirtillo! Hope the little guy is feeling better really soon.

Dallas didn't have that kind of reaction. He did end up with a little bump where the shot was given that stayed around until about a month or so later. Luckily I knew about it before hand thanks to this forum :)

  • Some have a bad reaction.. which is why I always give Benadryl before any of mine get rabies

  • lilly has had a very bad reaction to her shots.im not sure which one it is that she reacts to but with her first set of shots she was fine but after a few hours at home she started shaking and acting very tired, leaning against the walls for support, and screaming when you tried to pick her up…it was horrible.

but the last time she got her shots she was fine.

  • Another reason to always "separate" shots instead of doing the "whopper" combo of everything at one time. I never give Rabies with any other shots… and I also do not give Lepto or Corona. Other then rabies which legally I can't do and get a rabies certificate, I do give my own shots when due...

I also decided to separate the shots. Mirtillo had his 'normal' shots when he was 9 weeks and 13 weeks and just now his rabies. (6+ months)
He had no reaction to the first two sets of shots.

  • Poor pup. My basenji never had a reaction to the rabies but she had a reaction to the K9 Advantix flea and tic meds. She is scratching and shaking very often. Im not going to use it anymore.

I believe another member on here, BDawg, had a problem with Advantix as well. I think her girl Lexi had a really bad reaction to it if I recall. If you do a search, I remember her posting a link about reactions to it in other dogs.

  • I've never had a dog react to vaccinations, but a close friend has a fox terrier that has reactions every time and has to be on Benadryl a full day before.

    Janneke,

Make sure that your veterinarian noted this adverse reaction in Mirtillo's medical record – something very important if he needs to have a medical waiver the next time he is due for a booster.

You might also want to get a 2nd opinion from a homeopathic/holistic veterinarian. You can do an online search for one near you at American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association http://www.holisticvetlist.com/, Academy of Veterinary Homeopathy http://www.theavh.org/referral/index.php .

I hope your boy is doing better.

  • Yeh, Lexi had a very bad reaction to K9 Advantix. Never ever using that again!

Lexi actually just last had her rabies vaccination. We were told not to leave her alone for the next 12 hours. She didn't have any reaction, but she did throw up once. :(

    Poor kid…:( :(

  • Hey Janneke.
Will you please keep us informed about your experience with the raw meat diet. BTW, ever heard of the Carnibest frozen raw? Easily available in our countries, not expensive and I read some positive feedback about it.
And keep sending us those great pictures of Mirtillo ! I love them.:)

  • Is he feeling better now?

Carnibest is great. Our other dog got it, and it was the only thing she really enjoyed (except for an occasional sheep heart ;) )
Mirtillo has taste it when he was younger and LOVED it!

I don't think it's really cheap though… 1 kilo = € 3,25 and Mirtillo needs 2 kilos per week.. You can buy 30/70/100 kilo at once and than it's a bit cheaper.. but you need a big fridge :)

  • Well, isn't this a timely post?
So Lexi had her rabies shot on June 21st. It's now June 28 and I've noticed a lump at the injection site. I called the vet to see what they thought and the nurse said it wasn't uncommon- but if she has no other symptoms, that it would just go away. She's not bothered by the knot on her hip, no vomit or "D"… So I'm hoping it will go down soon. Any opinions on this?

    .

Lump is very common to a rabies shot… it will go away in a couple of weeks... and could be up to a month...

  • Wow– that long??
First time she's had a lump.
Is that cause to worry she might have a reaction next time?

There are different types of rabies vaccine. The ones most likely to cause a reaction have thimerosal in them. A friend's dog (not a Basenji) had an anaphylactic reaction to a rabies shot, and she would have lost him had the vet not still been present and able to counter it with epinephrine. In the future they made sure the shots he got did not have thimerosal. Usually reactions aren't quite so dramatic, but something to keep in mind. I also used blood titers to avoid unnecessary vaccinations with my dogs. More expensive, but worth it!

@donc Actually it's not just your opinion. Some serious research is coming out about humans and animals and gut bacteria. We have truly over sterilized to the point our bodies are losing the ability to defend ourselves. LOL on testing for human allergy. I never thought about that! I wonder how often that comes up?

This sucks! I can't find any evidence of bat poop on my balcony anywhere. There's also really no where for them to hide. The bat was found where it could have possibly come off my balcony where the pup was. She was on the third floor balcony, and the bat was all the way downstairs, probably about three feet from the beginning of my actual balcony. When you come downstairs, there's a little step leading down to the sidewalk. The bat was perched on this part of the sidewalk, hanging upside down. I could have sworn it was slightly twitching when I first saw it, but it could have been the wind. I sat outside to warn my neighbor, because they also have kids and would have to step right where the bat was. When he came home and I warned him, he smacked the bat down with a piece of wood he just do happened to be carying. I asked him of it was alive and he said it was dead. I told him I had called someone to come get it, but I guess he took things into his own hands. I called the vet but of course they were closed. So I left a message explaining what happened and asked what he thinks I should do. They have an emergency clinic but since I don't even know if her and the bar had actual contact I'm not considering it an emergency, unless she shows some dramatic behavior change between now and Monday. Everything I've been able to find online seems to say that a 10 day confinement to check for symptoms is fine.

@tanza: Found this under Florida law on rabies (2) A dog or cat shall not be required to be vaccinated against rabies if a licensed veterinarian has examined the animal and has certified in writing that at such time vaccination would endanger the animal's health because of its age, infirmity, disability, illness, or other medical considerations. Such exempt animal shall be vaccinated against rabies as soon as its health permits. And it also seems in Florida, it can change from county to county on if required yearly or 3 yrs.. Good to know that about an animal with health issues - and yes, it does vary county to county. Hillsborough, where I live, requires it yearly.

Judy Schor's agility champion, Peaches, suffered a significant adverse reaction to a rabies booster. Judy has posted photos of Peaches and a letter from the vaccine manufacturer, Fort Dodge, offering a settlement to pay for medical treatment if they not disclose information about the claim. You can read the letter and see photos of Peaches at this link: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2042916&id=1447415540&ref=mf .

Well Champ only had to get a cortizon shot the first time he developed allergies and now if we see him itching or biting his paws we give him a pill but honestly only had to do it twice (the pills). Good luck with your babies.
